The concept of this 'big chair' also became the inspiration for Tears For Fears to name their album 'Songs from the big chair', as they felt safe to say whatever they wanted and however they wanted, not afraid of what anyone would say.
The Big Chair
Tears for Fears Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In your big chair
In your big chair
The devil has the power to assume a appleasing shape
She wants
Oh my God
The lyrics suggest a desire for closeness and intimacy as the person wants to sit beside someone in their big chair. The metaphor of the big chair may represent a position of power or comfort, and the desire to be close to the person in this chair may symbolize a desire for protection or security. The repetition of the phrase "in your big chair" emphasizes this desire and creates a sense of longing.
However, the second line of the song brings a darker element to the lyrics. The reference to the devil having the power to assume an appealing shape suggests deceit and manipulation. The juxtaposition of these two lines creates a sense of tension and foreshadows a potential conflict or danger in the desire for closeness.
Overall, the lyrics to "The Big Chair" explore the complexities of human relationships and the desire for connection, while also acknowledging the potential risks and dangers that come with vulnerability.

It's my birthday, 57 today, yaya. Working from home, listening to albums from my youth for a melancholic kind of day. My friend Andy had this on cassette and every song reminds me of younger, carefree times when 4 of us would squeeze into his Mk2 Escort and tear up the roads of Northumberland. No worries. No stress. If you're in your late teens reading this enjoy the time you are living in, as a 57 year old once said they really are the best days of your life 😁

i bought this on vinyl just after is was released i didn't know anyone else who really liked them at the time, as all my friends or school mates where into just regular pop music, i played this so much on my chitty record player i wore it out, literally one of my favourite albums of all time. Which is really odd as now as a 50 something year old idiot, i listen to mostly rap and hip hop. I really think it stands up to most if not all modern music with regards to production values and sheer quality. hopefully i will still be listening to it in another 30 years. much love to tears for fears and all that appreciate this album /band

@@1970howl I just saw them 2 days ago at the PNC in NJ... Tipping Point Tour. The show opened with "Listen" and they were fantastic throughout. This particular album evokes strong memories for me, too, especially as it was May '85, and I was graduating from college, venturing out on my own for the first time...
