He has been listening to fast electronic music ever since he tuned into Pressure FM in 1992 and heard Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era’s ‘Far Out’. Way Out
Technicolour Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On my TV screen
Hope wrapped in plastic sheets
There's no greater truth
Than the one that you can buy
At a discount price
There's only one way to go
And you know
As well as I
That it ain't the way
Way out
Tonight pride walks
The same paths as death
Sooner or later they must meet
The one that lights away
Will be the first one to wall
And none can take it's place
Your life for mine..
There's only one way to go
And you know
As well as I
That it ain't the way
Way out
There's only one way to go
And you know
As well as I
That it ain't the way
Way out
The first verse of Technicolour's song "Way Out" speaks to the idea of finding hope in consumerism. The singer suggests that they have found a reason to live through something they have seen on their TV screen - something that has been packaged and sold to them as a product. This sense of hope is described as being wrapped in plastic sheets, which suggests a certain level of disposability, as well as a disconnect from reality. The second half of the verse introduces the idea that there is no greater truth than what can be bought - essentially commenting on the way that consumerism has taken over as a primary source of meaning, and how we dress up our lives with products in order to feel like we have purpose.
The chorus of the song reinforces the idea that there is only one direction to go, even though it may not be the "way out" that we desire. The repetition of this phrase drives home the sense of inevitability - that no matter how hard we try, we cannot escape the direction that our societies and cultures are moving in. The second verse of the song speaks to the idea of mortality, and how our pride and our eventual demise are intertwined. The final line of the verse suggests that the one who lights the way (perhaps our guides or leaders) will be the first to fall, and that there is no one who can take their place.

All my life I've stumbled in the dark
Reaching out but finding only air
Air and space, space and time
Time and faith never seem to collide
In the distance i heard you breathe
I called out your name in a silent scream
Just like fireflies in the night
Dancing without light
Just like fireflies in the night
Lost and blind without a guide
Voices echo in the night
Skies open their wounds tonight
I find your hand I feel with my skin
In the darkness there is no sin
Just like fireflies
Dancing without light
Just like fireflies in the night
Lost and blind without a guide
