Dream A Little Dream Of Me
Teddy Raph & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me

Say "Night-ie night" and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading, but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading, but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you

But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Overall Meaning

The song Dream a Little Dream of Me by Teddy Raph and His Orchestra is a beautiful and romantic lullaby that conveys a sense of longing and nostalgia. It starts with the image of stars shining bright above and night breezes whispering 'I love you' to the beloved. The birds singing in the sycamore tree add a touch of beauty and serenity to the romantic ambiance of the song. The singer then urges the lover to say "Night-ie night" and kiss him, to hold him tight and tell him she'll miss him. The sense of loneliness is palpable as the singer says he's "alone and blue as can be" and asks his lover to dream a little dream of him.

The second verse starts with the fading of stars, but the singer lingers on, still craving the lover's kiss. He wants to linger till dawn, just saying this. The singer wishes his lover sweet dreams that leave all worries behind, but he also wants her to dream a little dream of him. The use of repetition throughout the song creates a dreamy and soothing effect that matches the theme of the lyrics.

Thanks for posting this. I wasn't aware Ted Raph had a band. Theodore Raph (born Jehial Isadore Raph, March 24, 1930, in Boston) was my uncle. He was a composer, arranger, and conductor. He played Dixieland trombone and recorded with The California Ramblers and Phil Napoleon during the 1920s and 1930s. He traveled with touring groups in the Eastern U.S. during the 1920s.

He later composed and arranged for a number of big bands in the 1930s. He composed for television, radio. and film. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 in the Special Services Division and Signal Corps Photographic Center conducting, composing, and arranging music for movie shorts, transcriptions, and radio shows. He went on to an active role in prominent radio and TV shows, including "Name That Tune" on radio from 1952-1953 and on TV from 1953 - 1959. He followed that on "Yours For A Song" from 1961 - 1963.

He later became a arranger and published two books, "The American Song Treasury: 100 Favorites‬" (1986), and "The Songs We Sang"‬ (1986‬ ) that remained in print many years afterward.

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper, I love you
Birds singin' in the sycamore trees
Dream a little dream of me

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longin' to linger till dawn dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

( Stars fading but I linger on dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longin' to linger till dawn dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Leave the worries behind you
But in your dreams, whatever may be
You've gotta make me a promise, promise to me
You'll dream, dream a little dream of me )

My all time favorite version of this song. Superior to the slowed down recreations of such a magnificent song.

Hi Brian, I am a fan of your Uncle Ted's music. My Grandpa Bob Effros performed with him in New York and England. Am writing book about my Grandpa and his jazz buddies. Email me: EffrosMusic@gmail.com See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Raph

@btphelps

Barbara Effros thanks for the note. It's fascinating to know that you know someone who knew my uncle. Ted's son Alan is a professional musician and lives in Danbury, Connecticut now. He may also be helpful.

@barbaraeffros3009

Brian - your Uncle Ted and my Grandpa composed two songs together. I have copyright info for 'Get Away Jitterbug". Will contact you and Alan soon. see www.BobEffros.blogspot.com for more about my Grandpa. Plan to write about Teddy Raph: have some stories from on cassette from my Grandpa.

Any publicity Smith Ballew can receive will be long overdue; a great crooner; on the female side of the 1920's, Annette Hanshaw is right up there with smith. In Britain dring the 20's & 30's check out the superb singing of Al Bowlly. The 20's produced some incredible to-tapping, spirit-lifting music. Thank goodness not all the records from that era were destroyed and we have this remarkable music from a bygone era still with us.

@240252

I think, it says a lot that he was born and he died in a small town in Texas. Simply, all his life he was just a good nice boy. He was not tailored to a glamorous career and he remained immune to the great temptations and great lows of Hollywood. I am sure that in his late years he performed his work on the aircraft with the same joyuful smile and diligence as singing.

@kereyquaid2140

I have just heard three recordings of this song, all from 1931. King, and Nelson, and this- this one is best. This and the Ella& Louis version win.
