Wilson studied piano and violin at Tuskegee Institute. After working in the Speed Webb and Louis Armstrong bands, he joined Benny Carter's Chocolate Dandies in 1933. In 1935 he joined the Benny Goodman Trio (which consisted of Goodman, Wilson and drummer Gene Krupa, later expanded to the Benny Goodman Quartet with the addition of Lionel Hampton). The trio performed during the big band's intermissions. By joining the Trio, Wilson became the first black musician to perform in public with a previously all-white jazz group.
In the 1930s and 1940s he recorded fifty hit records with various singers such as Lena Horne and Helen Ward, including many of Billie Holiday's most successful records. During these years he also recorded many highly regarded sessions with a wide range of important swing musicians, such as Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Shavers, Red Norvo, Buck Clayton and Ben Webster.
Wilson formed his own short-lived big band in 1939, then led a sextet at Cafe Society from 1940 to 1944. In the 1950s he taught at the Juilliard School. Wilson performed as a soloist and with pick-up groups up until the final years of his life.
My Funny Valentine
Teddy Wilson Lyrics

You make me smile with my heart,
Your looks are laughable, un-photo-graphical,
Yet you´re my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smiling?
Not if you care for me.
Stay little valentine, stay!
Each day is Valentine´s Day
Each day is Valentine´s Day
The song "My Funny Valentine" by Teddy Wilson is a classic love ballad that speaks to the idea of unconditional love without the need for physical beauty or perfect traits. The opening lines of the song highlight the irony of the subject being referred to as a "funny Valentine" yet being loved deeply by the singer. The singer finds joy and happiness in the smallest of gestures and moments, which makes the Valentine's appearance irrelevant in terms of love and affection. The following lines describe the physical imperfections of the Valentine, including a non-photogenic look and a weak mouth, but the singer assures the Valentine that there is no need for changes, as these are the things that make them unique and special.
The final lines of the song sum up the essence of the message that each day can be like Valentine's Day when you are with someone you love. The singer is asking the Valentine to remain in their life not just as a person but as a symbol of love and affection. This song is a beautiful representation of love that goes beyond the physical; it shows that true love is not about perfection, but rather it is about accepting and loving the imperfections.
