The band was founded after both Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo bands on hiatus to form a new group that lets the married couple focus on making music together, and allows them to spend more time together while touring and recording. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have toured together in 2007, under the name Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival, however this group's material was largely culled from Derek & Susan's solo projects, while the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band mostly focuses on performing original songs.
After the announcement in late 2009 of a hiatus for both The Derek Trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi Band , the couple began writing new material, working out of their home studio in Jacksonville with a rotating cast of friends and musicians. Their first concert was on April 1, 2010 at the Savannah Music Festival, and although their touring schedule was limited in 2010, the group did perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, and several other festivals and venues.
The collaboration between Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi has also extended to other artists. Trucks and Tedeschi appeared together on Herbie Hancock's album, The Imagine Project, performing the track "Space Captain" with additional members of Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, including Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, and Mike Mattison. A music video was also released, showing Herbie Hancock as he recorded the song at Trucks & Tedeschi's home studio. Trucks and Tedeschi also appeared with Herbie Hancock to perform "Space Captain" at his 70th birthday concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
On 7 March 2011, the band announced that it was changing its name to the Tedeschi Trucks Band. The first Tedeschi Trucks Band CD, Revelator, will be released on June 7th 2011.

I got a lot to lose
Guess I hold a candle
For singers of the blues
You're a hard case to refuse
Call down any witness
Lord, I stand accused
If they cut me loose
You're a hard case to refuse
(You're a hard) You're a hard
(Such a hard) Such a hard
(You're a hard case to refuse)
(You're a hard) You're a hard case to choose
Living a lie and loving you
You're a hard case to refuse
Oh, such a hard case to refuse
You got a lot to learn
I got a lot to lose
Guess I hold a candle
For singers of the blues
You're a hard case to refuse
Lord, I got it in me
What it comes down to
Climb that concertina
And come back when you're bruised
You're a hard case to refuse
(You're a hard) You're a hard
(Such a hard) Such a hard
You're a hard case to refuse
(You're a hard) You're a hard case to choose
Living a lie and loving you
You're a hard case to refuse (Oh yeah)
A hard case to refuse
Hard case to refuse (I'm a witness)
Hard living the blues
Hard case to refuse (I ain't giving up on you)
Hard case to refuse
The lyrics of Tedeschi Trucks Band's song "Hard Case" are centered around a difficult love interest who is a challenge to resist despite the potential consequences. The first verse alludes to the fact that the singer, while having much to lose, cannot help but hold a torch for "singers of the blues," implying that the hard case is possibly a musician or someone tied to the music world in some way. This hard case is so stubbornly appealing that the singer feels accused and is able to call down any witness to testify to it. However, the singer still holds out hope that they can return to the fold with the hard case even if they are "cut loose."
The second verse picks up where the first left off, with the singer admitting they are "living a lie and loving you" and that despite the difficulties and hardships, they still find themselves unable to refuse this hard case. The chorus repeats this idea of the hard case being a difficult yet appealing and irresistible choice. The bridge acknowledges the difficulty of the situation, with the singer admitting that the hard case is a challenge to resist but also stating that they are willing to push through any obstacles and come back even if bruised.
Overall, the song details the complex and sometimes painful nature of love, especially when that love runs counter to what might be considered wise or logical. The singer is willing to risk their reputation and other potential losses in order to pursue this hard case, suggesting that the pull of love can sometimes be stronger than reason.

I love how there are visual cues from each of the previous album covers: the rays on the sun from Revelator. The bison running at a train from Made Up Mind, and the soaring bird from Let Me Get By.
Excellent video, and an excellent song that I already can't get out of my head
