Fortunate Fellow
Teenagers (Frankie Lymon & The) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
The stars all seemed to know
You didn't mean all those sighs
The night that you told me
I try, but there's no forgetting
When evenin' appears
I sigh but there's no regretting
In spite of my tears
Who wouldn't believe those lips
Who wouldn't believe those eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
(Instrumental Break)
I try, but there's no forgetting
When evenin' appears
I sigh but there's no regretting
In spite of my tears
The Devil was in your heart
But Heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
Those lies
Teeny-weeny little white lies
The song "Fortunate Fellow" by Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers discusses the concept of little white lies in a relationship. The song is written with an understanding that lies can be a part of a relationship, even if they cause pain. The singer describes the night in which his partner lied to him. Although the moon was aglow and the night was beautiful, the singer recalls that their partner's lies made the night less spectacular. The lyrics explain that despite knowing that the partner was not speaking the truth, the singer was unable to forget the lies when the evening appeared.
The lyrics also suggest that the singer is aware of the partner's true feelings. The stars seemed to know that the sighs were not genuine, and the little white lies were merely a way for the partner to avoid the truth. Even though the lies were hurtful, the singer still recognizes the beauty in their partner. The Devil was in their heart, but Heaven was in their eyes. Therefore, the singer describes himself as a fortunate fellow because he was with someone he loved, despite the lies.
Overall, the song suggests that lying can be a part of a relationship and that love can exist despite it. The singer recognizes that the lies hurt but still sees the beauty in his partner. The lyrics are a great example of how even in challenging situations, love can still thrive.

I remember this like it was yesterday. What a voice, and what stage presence. Like Alan Freed, he knew how to win over audiences.
