Back in Your Head
Tegan and Sara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Build a wall of books
Between us in our bed
Repeat, repeat the words
That I know we both have said

Relax into the need
We get so comfortable
Remember when I was
So strange and likable

I just want back in your head
I just want back in your head
I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray

When I get a little scared
When I get a little scared
When I get a little

When I jerk away
From holding hands with you
I know these habits hurt
Important parts of you

Remember when I was sweet and unexplainable
Nothing like this person, unlovable

I just want back in your head
I just want back in your head
I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray

When I get a little scared
When I get a little scared
When I get a little scared
When I get a little

Run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run

I just want back in your head
I just want back in your head
I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray
I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray

I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray
I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tegan and Sara's "Back in Your Head" delve into the complexities of relationships and the desire to reconnect with a partner who seems to be drifting away. The opening lines suggest a physical barrier between two people in bed, made up of books. This could symbolize a lack of intimacy or emotional distance that has developed between the two partners. The repeated phrases in the song serve to emphasize the feeling of being stuck in a repeating cycle of conflict and longing.

The lines "Relax into the need/We get so comfortable" depict the push and pull of familiarity in a relationship. While the two people have grown comfortable with each other, they may have lost some of the spark that existed when they first fell in love. The use of the phrase "When I get a little scared" reveals a fear of losing the relationship altogether, prompting the singer to act out in small ways to see if their partner will notice and respond.

Overall, "Back in Your Head" is a commentary on the complex nature of love and the challenges that arise between two people as they navigate their way through a long-term relationship. The desire to feel connected to someone else is a universal one, but as this song so poignantly illustrates, it's not always easy to achieve.

I remember a few years ago when Brisbane had really horrible weather and there was a lot of flooding and stuff and it got quite dangerous. My friend who was a huge Tegan and Sara fan sent them an email in the middle of the night just saying she was a bit scared and their music was helping her through, without thinking anything would come of it. That same night they replied to her and told her all these kinds words to comfort her. They emailed back and forth with her for days, just to this random fan from another country because they knew she was going through a shitty time and wanted to know she was safe. Nice girls.

I miss these indie days, felt like a band who wrote and performed their own songs could change the world and influence a generation, my music producer friend and I used to jam to Tegan and Sara all the time, I wanna throw him some love as we've been through so much together over the years, try searching Lonely Gimmick - Beaches, its got that old school indie sound and its one of those songs that makes me happy when I listen to it. I'm honestly so impressed he made it, did it all himself on his laptop
