Closer
Tegan and Sara Lyrics

A little bit closer
All I wanna know is
Can you come a little closer?
Here comes the breath before we get a little bit closer
Here comes the rush before we touch, come a little closer
The night sky is changing overhead
It's not just all physical
I'm the type who won't get oh so critical
So let's make things physical
I won't treat you like you're oh so typical
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh)
I won't treat you like you're oh so typical
All you think of lately
Is getting underneath me
All I dream of lately is how to get you underneath me
Here comes the heat before we meet a little bit closer
Here comes the spark before the dark, come a little closer
The lights are off and the sun is finally setting
The night sky is changing overhead
It's not just all physical
I'm the type who won't get oh so critical
So let's make things physical
I won't treat you like you're oh so typical
I want you close, I want you
I won't treat you like you're typical
I want you close, I want you
I won't treat you like you're typical
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Here come the dreams of you and me, here come the dreams
Ooh-ooh
Here come the dreams of you and me, here come the dreams
It's not just all physical
I'm the type who won't get oh so critical
So let's make things physical
I won't treat you like you're oh so typical
I want you close, I want you
I won't treat you like you're typical
I want you close, I want you
I won't treat you like you're typical
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh)
I won't treat you like you're typical
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh)
I won't treat you like you're typical
All I want to get is
A little bit closer
All I want to know is
Can you come a little closer?

“Closer” is a song about the anticipation before the kiss, before anything gets physical. It’s a love song that conjures adolescent longing, no matter how old you are, with impossibly catchy, cleverly rhyming lyrics. And it’s that cherishing of that gap between anticipation and release—asking to be closer, not touching; cherishing the moment before you realize you’re in too deep—that seems to speak to that particularly queer feeling of wanting something you know you may never get. –Larissa Pham

You like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. [...] In '87, Huey released this, Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to Be Square," a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself!"
