Slow Me Down
Tejas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, so much to say
And the words
Would they hurt if ever sent them on their way already?
And stars
Oh how the burn
For you and for me endlessly
When will I learn?
Slow me down
I cannot breathe I cannot
See the light of reason you've been feeding me
To wake me up
I cannot breathe I cannot
Reason with you
Slow me down
I cannot breathe I cannot
See the light of reason you've been feeding me
To wake me up
To reason with you

And you won't be satisfied
'Cause you try and you try
To move faster than the speed of life
And you know it comes down to this
There's a fine finish line
That you won't care to notice

Slow me down
I cannot breathe I cannot
See the light of reason you've been feeding me
To wake me up
I cannot breathe I cannot
Reason with you
Slow me down
I cannot breathe I cannot
See the light of reason you've been feeding me
To wake me up
To reason with you

And all the lives you've tried to touch
Are now just lies that you've made up
Imaginations all the stuff
That you thought your dreams were made of
And all you've ever wanted was
Time to hold on to what was yours
It's gone

Your still here
You are not gone

Overall Meaning

Tejas's song Slow Me Down is a reflection on how often we rush through life without stopping to consider our words or actions. He talks about the feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the pace of life around him. The opening lines 'Oh, so much to say, and the words, would they hurt if ever sent them on their way already?' showcase how we can often have so much to say, but we are hesitant to say them out loud as we are scared that they might hurt the person to whom we are addressing them to. He further states, 'And stars, oh how the burn, For you and for me endlessly. When will I learn?' which show how two people are connected and how their relations are like the stars - burning bright, endlessly. And he regretfully acknowledges that he is yet to learn when to slow down and take things easy.

The chorus 'Slow me down, I cannot breathe, I cannot see the light of reason you've been feeding me, To wake me up. I cannot breathe, I cannot reason with you' beautifully shows the feeling of being overwhelmed and needing someone to stop us from spiraling out of control. Sometimes we need the ones we love to intervene and help us to see the light of reason and slow us down in our daily lives. The verse 'And you won't be satisfied, 'Cause you try and you try, To move faster than the speed of life, And you know it comes down to this, There's a fine finish line, That you won't care to notice' showcases the obsession with rushing through life without noticing the finer details of it. The song concludes with the acknowledgement that all you've ever wanted was time to hold onto what was yours, but it's gone, and you are still here!
