Eyes Wide Wider
Tempers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You battered the songbird
I planted in your garden
So you could have in your head
My dark and heavenly whistle
And we will see what we see and then
Mountain to mountain
Circus of dreamsNever fall over
Eyes getting wider
And we will see what we see and then
The fountain
You sent me
Has no blood
Or melody
No flood nor curtsy
But it keeps good company
With formless things that enchant me
The lyrics of Tempers' "Eyes Wide Wider" are mysterious and abstract, yet subtly convey a sense of betrayal, circumvention, and disappointment. The opening line of "mouthful of feathers" suggests that the singer's mouth is filled with lies, unable to speak truthfully, but rather with the feathers that are soft and deceitful. It is followed by a metaphor where the songbird planted in your garden is being battered, representing the singer’s unease with the receiver’s handling or even destruction of something the singer had created for them.
The next line of "My dark and heavenly whistle" may refer to the singer's own sound of inspiration or offerings, now in possession of the receiver. The chorus of “Mountain to mountain, Circus of dreams, Never fall over, Eyes getting wider” possibly alludes to the concept of escapism or seeking an unattainable ideal. “And we will see what we see and then”, followed by “The fountain you sent me, Has no blood or melody, No flood nor curtsy But it keeps good company With formless things that enchant me” suggests that the receiver had once brought the singer something of significance but the gift is without meaning anymore, only serving as a reminder of a time that once was.

I found this about 4 years ago and its haunting melody and pulse are nothing short of bewitching. I feel the same about they're other work , in it's own category the band does it quite well.
