Dance to My Tune
Tempest Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll cover your head so next to my time
I have the right to make you mine
I've given the best years of my life to you
Can you in tune so keep in mind
When you're older and you find
That you don't know what is wrong
Beware the tiny smiling faces
Telling you things and taking you places
They pull your strings to make you obey
Otherwise, what will the neighbors say?
I think my music fits your time
You write your own words, learn your own lines
My answer's not the only one
It's not the last tune that you'll ever hear
To lead your path by open doors
My big mistakes ensured in yours
Give my best to show you a way
To make your song with something new to say
Beware the tiny smiling faces
Telling you things and taking you places
They pull your strings to make you obey
Otherwise, what will the neighbors say?
My song is nearly over, I know the words well
The only gift time value, but can you tell?
If you feel what I feel, will you sing me my song?
Turn the words around, sing me your own
interpretation
In "Dance to My Tune," Tempest sings about the power dynamic between an older individual and a younger one. The older person in the song offers the younger person bread and a place to stay, but in return, they want the younger person to "sing for them" and essentially be at their beck and call. The older person believes that they have the right to make the younger person theirs because they have given the best years of their life to them. However, Tempest urges the younger person to keep in mind that they have the power to change their own soul as they grow older and to beware of people who might try to manipulate or control them with flattery or other means.
Through the song, Tempest shows how music can be a tool for empowerment and self-expression. She tells the younger person that they can write their own words and learn their own lines, and that her music is not the only one they will ever hear. She viewed music as a way to lead one's own path by opening doors and making mistakes that ultimately help one find their voice and something new to say. The song ends on a hopeful note, with Tempest asking the listener to turn the words around and sing their own song.

medusa wit wings...a funeral song...as a guitarist for 35 odd years....this solo by mr Ollie halsall soars like all the immortal gtr solos...I wonder what influence he had on holdsworth and vice-versa with regards the extreme legato technique ? EITHER WAY OLLIE HAD HIS OWN THING WITH IT...HE SOUNDS LIKE A QUIRKY ..FLIGHTY..MOODY CHARACTER.VERY EXPRESSIVE AND TRUE TO HIS OWN VISION OF ART AND HIMSELF I THINK..thank-you for all the posts.
