History
Tenacious D Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is a song called the history of Tenacious D
And its not just a list of bullshit that we've done in the past
It's a chronicling of our rise....TO POWER

We ride with kings on mighty steeds
Across the devils plain
We've walked with Jesus and his cross
He did not die in vain, NO!

We've run with wolves, we've climbed K2
Even stopped a moving train
We've travelled through space and time my friends
To rock this house again, ROCK!

We ride and we ride and we'll never subside
And we'll ride till the planets collide
And if you say that we do not ride
I'll tan you're fucking hide, RIDE!

Kyle's fingers be silver, Jacks voice then be gold
But lest you think we're vain
We know you're all robots and we don't care
Tenacious D, we reign!

We rei-eign, surpreme, OOOHH GOD!
Burrito supreme, and a chicken supreme
And a cutlass supreme
SUPREEEMEEEEE YEAAAAAHHH
SUPREME!!

(New album version has longer ending)

Overall Meaning

The song "History of Tenacious D" by the band "Tenacious D" is a playful and humorous take on telling the story of the band's journey to success. The song is not meant to be taken literally but rather as an exaggerated and fantastical portrayal of the band's aspirations and ambitions. The lyrics reflect the band's determination to succeed and their belief in their ability to overcome any obstacle that comes their way.

The song begins by establishing that this is not just a list of accomplishments but a chronicling of the band's rise to power. The lyrics then describe various fantastical feats that the band has supposedly accomplished. They have ridden with kings on mighty steeds, walked with Jesus and his cross, run with wolves, climbed K2, stopped a moving train, and traveled through space and time to rock the house. All of these feats are depicted as being larger than life and designed to showcase the band's power and influence.

The final part of the song takes a more humorous turn as the band pokes fun at themselves. Kyle's fingers are described as being silver, and Jack's voice is described as being gold. They then acknowledge that they know their audience is made up of robots, but they don't care because they believe they still reign supreme. The song ends on a playful note with the repeated use of the word supreme, which is meant to be a humorous take on their success.

@Lazarus142

It doesn't matter how many times I hear this, or watch the movie, that last "Supreme" at 1:43 gets me every time.

@himbourbanist

lmfao and Lee's like totally blown away, I love it

@danskyl7279

Lee sold it. He was the first of many Tenacious D fanboys xD

@rainey2764

This is their best song ever. They harmonize way better than so many other bands who have larger audiences and are more well known. I wish they could get better recognition!
