Teresa Salgueiro Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nas vielas e nas esquinas
Nas escadas e nas colinas
Nas calçadas feitas à mão
No bater do meu coração
Mas não me canso de percorrer
A cidade em que vim nascer
Onde o Tejo vem adormecer
Um convite p'ra navegar
E que abraça quem quer chegar
Desde sempre assim foi
P'la manhãs
Do Castelo desço a Alfama
Labirinto de casas brancas
Enfeitadas com andorinhas
E que é o berço de tradições
Do velho fado, das procissões
Das tabernas e dos pregões
E onde nas ruas pequeninas
Ainda ecoam trovas antigas
E se inventam novas cantigas
De louvar ao bom Santo António
Que Lisboa venera
Eu só queria desenhar nesta melodia
O amor à minha cidade
Teimosa fantasia
É assim
Que eu gosto de imaginar
Esta Lisboa secular
Onde habitam todos os povos
De tantas raças, velhos e novos
A cidade mais luminosa
Bela, mágica, radiosa
Eu vou sempre cantar
P'ra ti Lisboa
De entre todas a mais formosa
Bela, mágica, radiosa
Vou p'ra sempre cantar
The lyrics of Teresa Salgueiro's song "Lisboa" describe the singer's love and attachment to her home city of Lisbon, Portugal. The first verse describes the city at night, with its winding streets and hills, all beautifully crafted with hand-laid sidewalks. Salgueiro acknowledges feeling a sense of weary familiarity with the city, but declares that she can never tire of wandering through it, and especially loves the way the River Tagus empties out into the sea.
In the second verse, Salgueiro takes on the role of tour guide, leading us through the winding streets of Alfama, with its white houses decorated by colorful swallows, which is the birthplace of Portugal's melancholy fado music and a hub of traditional practices and rituals. She goes on to characterize Lisbon as a city that is home to people of all ethnicities, ages, and cultures - a place that is luminous, magical, and radiantly beautiful. Throughout the song, Salgueiro's voice is soulful and passionate, creating a melancholy, yearning mood that reflects her deep love for her city.
