I understand your perspective. But humans come in almost infinite variations. Among them there will, statistically, thanks to the law of large numbers, be some few who begin rotten only to grow into fresh fruit of life. None of us get to choose who or when we are born- what mix of genetics, epigenetics, time, or place we come into being. So some will draw short straw and be snuffed out too soon, and some will draw a equally short straw and be the rotten thing, that never had a chance either to be anything else but the one who snuffed out the other. Both are tragic.

But just because only 1 of the two tragic fates remains does not mean that the improbable growth from rotten to redeemed Is impossible.

In that case, should we not try to allow for the good that could still come forth to do so?

The impulse to eternally punish someone who may yet be able to contribute something positive to the world should be tempered, because to deny the world any measure of goodness is not only also tragic, but wasteful as well since no punishment can return a lost life.

This is precisely what the invention of forgiveness was for, to allow good to grow and grow and eventually overtake the bad. Forgiveness is not about forgetting, but about providing fertile ground on which greater goods can overtake our baser instincts to burn it all down.

When and where we can reasonably do so, we must give as many people as possible a second chance to do do right by the spark of life in them that reaches back at least 4 billion years where we all began. Because on the cosmic scale, the ending of one life is not balanced by the ending of another. No, it is balanced by the LIVING, in humble gratitude and honor, of another life that would have otherwise also ended, or never begun at all.

Balance and fairness are not the same thing, nor are they always mutually exclusive.

Are you thw same person at 40 that you were at? Literally no, every call in your body has died and been replaced in t that time.
Yet your deeper sense of self is somehow still there, even as it looks back at your past deep shallow), 5:33 sense of self. M

@@juliejanesmith57 bless you for bringing some tiny bit of brain muscle into this comment section...

its sickening how almost everyone is blinded by emotional irrationality and directs their anger filled and twisted sence of justice at the very first surface level thing they see and call it the right thing to do... instead of wondering how to prevent such horrible fates...

we focus on how to satisfy the desire for revenge and retribution on a individual who fell victim to under developed social care and his own naive neglagence at a equally under developed age... consequences for bad choices and misstakes are important life lessons...

but locking up your problems in a small cell and trying to pretend theyre going to vanish out of existance one day is just patheticly ignorant point of view...

The most important and crucial things that make a sociaty stable and function are healthcare, good aducation for teachings of critical thinking, and social studies with system structure finaced by the goverment...

but what can you honestly expect from a country where citzens seem to only feel safe if everyone owns a gun because its stated in a ancient constitution... its ridiciolous beyond common reason.

Counselling is NOT "giving advice"... 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🙄

Counselling is helping a person to recognise and acknowledge what is happening within themselves, and the impact of their life experiences on them. It is helping them to find their own strengths and abilities to heal, and to create positive and effective coping strategies for future difficulties in order to thrive. 💖

We cannot know for sure at this stage whether he has had this level of genuine support in prison, and we cannot know for sure right now how capable he is of providing it in the future. I am always hopeful, because I have seen other murderers who have completely changed their lives around and who are now helping troubled youth and older people. 🙆🏻‍♀️ 😊 💖 🌿 👍🏾

I hope he can make good in life now.

"I want to get married, raise a family and hold down a job". All the things that Derrick never got to do. Because of him.

@goosewhisperer6275

Seriously! This literally makes me nauseous! There was certainly no "justice" for Derrick or his family! By the way, WHY does Smith think anybody would ever MARRY HIM or HIRE him? 🙄

@mariabykofsky4502

Obviously, the adult Smith has no sense of reality....

@JesusOrtiz-ow7zu
