I was stationed in Japan during the Korean War in the US Navy. I would go on liberty to the Olympic club in Yokohma to dance with the Japanese hostesses. Yes, this song was used in the soundtrack of the 1970 film "MASH" as well as the TV show, but it was a different version recorded in Hollywood just for the film. The singer then was Carole Kai, who's Japanese, but from Hawaii. She also sang the version of "Sayonara" used in the movie.

I first heard this song in the 76s, in the film MASH, where there were also other Japanese songs of the early 50s. I remember two: One by a girl singer, that the lyrics said something like: "The time has come for us to say sayonara..." and the other, the song "My Blue Heaven", sang by a male singer. ¿Anybody knows about these two songs, or where I can download a video or mp3 of any one? This version on the song was used in the original Mash feature film from 1970 before the tv show was done. I think that a different version was used in the piot episode of Mash in 1972 at the very beginning of the episode. It should be on the DVD version.

I see lots of comments about this song being from MASH... I'd heard it somewhere at least a couple times in my 37 years having never seen an episode of MASH. But I definitely knew it when heard it in AKIRA. Great movie and great song. It IS catchy and easy to get in your head.

I discovered this song while watching the videotape of Akira when it was released. I thought it was a little unusual because of the music in the film. It was like a mild and whimsical distraction before more action occurs. I have been wondering for many years what the name of this song was. Now, I know. I love this song.

MASH brought me here, too. And what a neat song it is! Someone once remarked it was never heard in the series. It actually was but it wasn't this recording. It was with a different arrangement and singer --- a "don't blink or you'll miss it" moment in Radar's Report.

I was born in Okinawa and this record came back with my Dad along with sayonara and others I would recognize if I heard them (Via con dios was one I do remember that Teruko also recorded). Anyway, I remember singing this when I was 4-5. . lol, Was happy to hear it on the MASH soundtrack.

@Gypsielectro Well, the Sayonara you are looking for is the 1953 version by MIYOSHI UMEKI , it's better known by the name "Japanese Farewell Song" - Not to be confused by Miyoshi's 1957 song Soyanara , which was the theme from a Warner Bros movie of the same name.... Sadly, no one has loaded the JFS on YT, so far.

Searched for this song for YEARS, because of Akira. Then accidentally heard it in the end-titles(i never heard the end-titles since i saw Akira about 20 years ago.. can you believe it?) @alontas I believe this was called the Japanese Farewell Song, but I heard a song by Sondi Sodsai recently that sounds just like it. It is called Shina No Yoru. The other one, just Google "My Blue Heaven".

俺はこの曲｢M☆A☆S☆H｣という映画で知ってタイトル等を調べて知りました。唄い手の暁テル子さんの不遇な晩年はのちにWikiで知りました。今の曲と違ってシンプルでわかりやすくて気分が良くなる曲ですね。日本語がわかればすぐ口ずさめるいいメロディだけに許された・・・なんて言ったら言い過ぎかな。

Kaneda's replacing Duke on keytar in TeamRokit, so upon his recommendation, stay tuned for our remake of this classic (get a kick out of the kidzz saying they heard this in 'Akira' first, and THEN in 'MASH'...hahaha...waitaminute...guess we did too...huh, maybe we're not THAT old, after all...). The plan is, that Leo'll put the tune in the soundtrack of the live-action version, if WB ever gets it together--maybe we can even light a fire under their ass, with that...? MySpace / RiceRokit

Sir, this is quite a good book so far! Finished the first chapter, but can't go on because my eyes hurt from staring at the screen, gonna try printing it perhaps, don't own a kindle, watching platoon, born on the fourth of july, reading a little of all quite on the western front, and a very little bit of ladies from hell, I thought that war is always absolutely hell, did not know that it has this funny side to it too... @papoj1PVR I had to look long and far but I have that one. PM me and I'll give you the link to the clip I made here on YT- I keep it unlisted. If you want to know, it's the Japanese Farewell Song by Kay Cee Jones, 1955. This was before the spoken German was put on the track with Chris Howland in or around 1957. One of the co-writers of the song was Freddie Morgan, an impressive Banjo Player with Spike Jones. And yes, the song is anachronistic to the film's setting, but it's ok.

@baginamonolog one of the things you guys are worried about is that because unlike DBZ or hokuto no ken which are great animes but get somewhat screwed over because of hollywood's failure to understand japanese media or anime in general, that they will screw this one up too, however this one has been regarded as one of the worlds best animes I am sure they will try extra hard not to fuck this up do to people all over the world knowing about this one.
