Heaven's Trail
Tesla Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know I'm on a slick trip, I'm always ready to kick ass
Up on the stage I'm in a rage, I'm havin' the time of my life
Yes, indeed, what a sweet, sweet life it is

Until some loco two-bit floosie with a Louie Le-Strange
Ain't good for nothin' but trouble
They're just two fools livin' up to their names
And now it's startin' to rain on my parade

You know there's nothin' like the real world to get me down
There's nothin' like the world outside that turns me upside down
It makes me feel like I'm headin' down a one-way, dead-end street

[Chorus]
There's no way out, no way out of this living hell
No way out, no way out, unless you walk heaven's trail
No way out, no way out of this living hell, livin' hell

You know I had it made in the shade, thinkin' that it's not so bad after all
That's when I woke up, smelled the coffee, I'm back where I started again, yes
And now it's pourin' rain on my parade

No there's nothin' like the real world to get me down, no
One is there to lift you up, one to drag you down
Now, don't you see that we're heading down a one-way, dead-end street

[Chorus]

There's no way out, no way out of this living hell
No way out, no way out, unless you walk heaven's trail
No way out, no way out of this living hell, I guess I'll live in hell

[Chorus]

Yes, it's a beautiful thing

You know, I'm on a slick trip, I'm always ready to kick ass

Overall Meaning

In “Heaven’s Trail”, Tesla's lead vocalist, Jeff Keith, expresses that he is living the life he wants, up on the stage of a rock concert. However, this happiness is short-lived because of a woman named Louie Le-Strange, who is nothing but trouble. She is accompanied by a man who lives up to his foolish name, who together ruin Jeff's parade. He then realizes that the real world is too harsh and unforgiving, and that he is on a one-way, dead-end street. In the chorus, Jeff acknowledges that there is no way out of this living hell except to walk on heaven's trail. Despite the grim reality of life, he believes that everything is a beautiful thing.

In this song, Tesla critiques the seductive lifestyle of rock stars who enjoy the spotlight, cameras, and glamor, but have to deal with manipulative and unfair media coverage. They explore the pressures and strains of the entertainment industry, how the highs of being an artist on stage can be easily replaced by feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction when someone or something disrupts their mojo. Despite the harsh reality, the song is upbeat and positive, concluding that everything is a beautiful thing.

Tesla was one the PUREST hard rock bands, in the 80s.
They never got the TRUE recognition they deserved.

@rickchyczewski576

Its because they were lumped in with glam and still are mixed in with the hair metal bands. Its also because Jeff Keith was not the prettiest of lead vocalist of the era. I always considered Metallica,GnR, tesla and queensryche as the best of the 80's. The rest were shit for the most part.

@davidilbery3330

The best in my opinion.

Keith was a good vocalist. If they had a stronger frontman they would have gotten much more recognition. I know, I will get blasted for that and the songs are forever imprinted with his sound. I am just saying. His voice was on the weak side and he did not have a strong presence. Every great band, the frontman has to either have a great voice or a great stage presence or both. Jeff had neither. That they made it as big as they did was testament to the band and Keith for doing a whole lot with a little.
