My favorite part about this number is that not only is Tevye asking her if she loves him, but with all the "unconventional" means of his daughters falling in love and getting married, he's trying to confirm that everything he believes, the way he was brought up, isn't wrong. I love this so much, and what makes it great is Golde and how her expression changes from shock, to annoyance, to reflection and finally, to admission and acceptance. It’s not something she wants to think about but realizes that they have been through so much together that she is his life, and he is hers. It’s beautiful and true to life. This song reminds me of my maternal great grandparents. My great grandmother was married beforehand to a man, who died in a farming accident, leaving her with their two little boys. My great grandma was so distraught, she nearly went crazy and was supposed to be put in a mental institution, but for some reason was not. She, in time met my great grandfather. He seemed to have taken an interest in her, asked her to marry him. She outright told him she didn't want to marry him and would not love him,... but marrying him was the only way of getting out of her parents house. So they married...He was like a father to her two little boys.....Some years passed by, and they eventually had my grandma and her two little sisters......My great grandma grew to love my great grandpa. :)

I remember first watching this movie when I was in middle school. I was reluctant because it was an "old" movie and my dad was making me watch it, but I instantly fell in love with FotR. And this scene/song in particular, I recall crying with happiness because it's such an adorable love, the kind of deep love everyone (and I do mean everyone) yearns for. Okay, what happened is they learned to love each other or grew to love each other. But love isn’t love if it’s an obligation. It isn’t a labour of love if you are doing it because you have to. That is why arranged marriages are not usually good or happy but every once in a while, you get a relationship like that. Love isn’t something you decide to do. It is something that can however grow over time if you try. That is what happened here. But even over a long time, sometimes love doesn’t happen. Even if giving the other person everything you have. Sometimes that leads to resentment because they don't realize how much of yourself you’ve given or because you wish you could have saved these things for someone who you wanted to have them.

Excellent point. Additionally, think about what it is they're fighting about. They bicker quite often, but none of it is on a personal level, where they are angry at who the other person is on the inside. They argue over little external details, but are bound by who they are on the inside. Only when arguments become personal does fighting become a problem, but I think they were far stronger a pair than they seemed.

Get a person you can fight with. People arent taught two important things. How to fight and how to break up. There will be less love songs but more love

Bickering and arguments (as long as they aren’t too harsh) are a sign of a healthy marriage. Humans by default all think differently, living with another you are bound to disagree on a ton of things.

When I hear households with spouses that never argue two things come to mind. 1) one of them is afraid to argue, and lives in complacency
2) you somehow hit the mega lottery and found a human that matches you to a T

@@killerkitten7534 It took me a long time to see it, but a certain amount of bickering is very healthy. It vents all the minor irritations and niggles that inevitably build up in a relationship in a low pressure way, rather than have them build up to a gigantic head of steam that one day explodes.

My hometown's Community Theatre put on this musical in 2009 and I was in the chorus. It was just before my senior year of high school. I absolutely adored this musical and I can reflect on it differently now than when I was a teen. I've been married for 8 years and these have been the best years of my life. Golde and Tevye's relationship is still as sweet as ever.

I know lots of married couples will say this, but, after 30 years, my late husband and I LOVED EACH OTHER!! I used to hum this song to myself whenever he was around, but I already knew the answer. YES, HE LOVED ME!! AND I LOVED HIM!! I still love him even though he's been dead for 2 years. We had a roller coaster relationship that in hindsight, wouldn't have missed for anything in the world. 🙂

I watched this movie so many times as a kid and this was a song I sat through wanting to get on with the story, but now at 24 this randomly came up while I was listening to soundtracks and it made me tear up. It means a lot more as an adult.
