Do You Love Me?
Tevye Golde and Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How's your love life,
How's your heartbeat,
How do you do with me?
How's that new boy,
How does he rate,
How do you do without me?
My doctors say I'm fit and healthy,
I really come on,
My bank will tell you that I'm solvent,
Except that I'm overdrawn,
So how's forgiving,
How's forgetting,
How can you do this to me?
And how's for living,
How's for getting a flat with me as a lessee?
I tell you what,
You're in a rot,
You need a caretaker, see?

Honey, how could you do,
How do you do without me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "Do You Love Me?" by Tevye Golde and Orchestra are a conversation between two people who were once in a relationship. The singer wants to know how his former lover is doing without him and if she has moved on with someone else. He mentions his own situation as well, claiming to be fit and healthy but also overdrawn at the bank. He asks how forgiveness and forgetting are going for her, and suggests that perhaps they should try living together again. Finally, he asks how she could have left him in the first place.

The song is a poignant exploration of the emotions involved in a break-up. The singer expresses a mix of regret, frustration, and sadness, all wrapped up in a layer of humor and playful banter. It's clear that he still cares deeply for his ex-lover and is struggling to move on. The lyrics highlight the complexity of relationships and the difficulty of letting go of someone you once loved.

Do love how Goldie points out that love isn't a mere emotion inside, it's all the work, the shared experiences, the pains and joys of being a couple.

@brigidtheirish

Exactly right. Dad told me that a girl he was interested in once asked him what he thought love was. He said it's the decision to commit yourself to someone, to put their needs before your own. She told him that was cold. "Yeah, so?"

Took him until he was 30 years old to find someone who thought of love the same way he did. He and Mom will be married for 41 years come April.

"Love is a choice", that's what my dad taught me growing up. Took him two marriages and over 30 years to figure it out for himself, but he said that love is waking up next to another person every day for the rest of your life, and every day you say "I will love this person today"

yes

@@brandondavidson4085 Attraction is a feeling, love is a choice. you love someone because you choose to experience life with them, by their side.

@jasonmartinez9051

It's sad but I've met people who don't think that way. For them, when the emotion is gone, the love is gone.
