A Saleman's Guide to Nonexistence
Thank You Scientist Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Leave without a trace.
Don't know when I'll be back again.
Time to go.
I'm not playing.
The fiction is a love that's built to outlast everything.
Time to go.
No carving my name in your cherry tree.
So go on, get your "good time" in.
Darling, I didn't come all this way just to sell you something.
Nothing grows here in the cold.
What you see is just a dream.
Don't.
Whatever you do to me, just hold on.
Whatever you do to me.
Feeling your heart tempting me.
The fear of letting go of it occupies some space.
So tired of being alone.
So tired of this place.
No carving my name in your cherry tree.
So much for your good timing.
Only thing about your love that's wrong is timing.
Everything about your love is wrong timing.

Choke on the memory now.
Darling I didn't come all this way just to give in.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of A Salesman's Guide to Nonexistence by Thank You Scientist explore the idea of leaving someone behind and moving on, while acknowledging the difficult emotions that come with it. The singer knows that it's time to leave, but they can't help feeling a sense of sadness and longing for what they're leaving behind. They reject the idea of creating a lasting memory, telling the other person not to carve their name in a cherry tree because it won't matter in the end. The singer acknowledges the good times they've had, but professes that they didn't come just to sell something or to give in to their heart's temptation.

The song speaks to the human desire for connection and companionship, while recognizing that sometimes it's necessary to move on. The repetition of the phrase "so tired" speaks to a sense of weariness and resignation, while the reference to a "salesman's guide to nonexistence" suggests a sense of disillusionment with the idea of selling or buying love. The final lines of the song suggest a sense of determination and self-respect, as the singer asserts that they didn't come all this way just to give in.

I'm so glad Tom was my guitar teacher for a year or so. Learned a lot from him. I remember when he would practice and fool around with the opening for My Famed Disappearing Act. Was so glad when I heard the band was doing well and touring. Had to stop teaching me, but the band's popularity skyrocketed. Still have this album he gave me when they first put it out. Great listen

@Jack-sk3we

Did you go to SOR Montclair? My old teacher replaced him there!

@Nicky G Ah thats awesome, did you meet james? I started in 2015

@tappajaav

@Jick That was serious question and he needs some time to think about that, but 9 months? I'm starting to believe he doesn't want to answer

@zagorith14

@Tappajaav Or he moved on to do other things and didn't see the message. People have lives, after all.
