The 1975
The-1975 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go down
Soft sound
Midnight
Car lights
Playing with the air
Breathing in your hair
Go down
Soft sound
Step into your skin?

I'd rather jump in your bones
Taking up your mouth, so you breathe through your nose

Overall Meaning

The opening track of The 1975's self-titled debut album, "The 1975," features lead singer Matty Healy's ethereal vocals and haunting instrumentation. The lyrics can be interpreted as a seductive invitation to intimacy, with Healy describing the sensation of being close to someone and feeling their breath on his skin. The line "Step into your skin? I'd rather jump in your bones" is particularly provocative, suggesting an almost physical need for closeness with the other person. The use of car lights and midnight setting also adds to the atmosphere of seduction and illicitness.

The song's title, "The 1975," is a reference to a message that was found on the back of a book Healy was reading during recording sessions for the album. The book was Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," and the message was a handwritten note that read "1 June, The 1975." Healy found it interesting and decided to use it as the name of his band.

You know when you're in that crowd, the room is dark, you hear this slowly coming on and that fucking rectangle lights up and under that rectangle is Matty, George Adam & Ross, the crowd goes fucking mad. Your heart jumps out of your chest and you know for the next hour or so this is it. I could live my life going to a 1975 gig everyday. They're fucking incredible. Love.
