Bring It On

My queen of the Bronx
Blue eyes and spitfire
I saw you walking back and forth about another boy
Thinking that you may want to leave

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love, then bring it on

And take it back out to the streets where you know you used to be
For the Romeos uptown, if I bring you down
And you're tired of those vows
And you're really walking out

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love, baby, bring it on
Oh, bring it on

Stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home
I'm hearing that he tells you he can read your palms
Is he better than my love? (better than my love?)
Is he better than my love? (better than my love?)

So I found the letters with the reasons to things
You've been feeling that he says they'll never know
And you say the night just got too cold

Well, everybody's cold
Who's gonna keep my baby warm
When everybody goes?

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love

Well, then wait a minute, wait a minute
(Wasn't I good to you?)
Wait a minute, wait a minute
(Wasn't I good to you?)
Wait a minute, wait a minute
(You don't know what's good for you)

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
You've been my baby for so long, come on, bring it on
Oh, bring it on

Stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home
I'm hearing that he tells you he can read your palms

If he's better than my love
If he's better than my love, then go on, take it all

Overall Meaning

The Gaslight Anthem's song Bring It On is a heart-wrenching tale of lost love and desperation. The singer of the song is pleading with his girlfriend, the "queen of the Bronx," to stay with him and not leave for another man. He knows she's been considering leaving and has heard rumors about another guy ("the Cool") who sings to her in songs. The singer begs her to give him a chance, telling her to "give me the fevers that just won't break, and give me the children you don't want to raise." He knows he's not perfect and that their relationship isn't always smooth sailing, but he's willing to fight for it. However, if this other guy is truly better than him, he says, "bring it on" - he's not going to stand in her way. In the end, the singer is left alone, questioning if he was ever "good enough" for his girlfriend, knowing that she's moved on to someone else.

The lyrics of Bring It On are incredibly emotional and raw, painting a vivid picture of the struggle to hold onto love in the face of uncertainty and fear. The singer's desperation and vulnerability are palpable, as he begs for a chance to make things right with his girlfriend. The use of imagery, such as "stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home," adds to the poignancy of the song, highlighting the feeling of being lost and alone.

I will never know how these guys aren't bigger than they are already, people don't know what they're missing!

You know, I do 100% agree that bands like this need so much more recognition. But, at the same time, I sort of enjoy listening to bands that not everyone knows about or is super popular. I think bands really change when they get to that stage, not every one... But it does happen. The Gaslight Anthem has really helped me through tough decisions in life and simply making music that is more than enjoyable and nothing but raw talent. Brian is a real musician, he loves what he does...
