Give Yourself a Try
The 1975 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You learn a couple things when you get to my age
Like friends don't lie and it all tastes the same in the dark
When your vinyl and your coffee collection is a sign of the times
You're getting spiritually enlightened at 29

So just give yourself a try
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give?

I found a grey hair in one of my zoots
Like context in a modern debate, I just took it out
The only apparatus required for happiness
Is your pain and fucking going outside
And getting STDs at 27 really isn't the vibe
Jane took her own life at 16
She was a kid who had the box tattooed on her arm
And I was 25 and afraid to go outside
A millennial that baby-boomers like

Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give?

And what would you say to your younger self?
Growing a beard's quite hard
And whiskey never starts to taste nice
And you'll make a lot of money, and it's funny
'Cause you'll move somewhere sunny and get addicted to drugs
And spend obscene amounts on fucking seeds and beans online

So just give yourself a try
Won't you give yourself a try?

Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The 1975's song Give Yourself A Try explore the idea of self-discovery and growth as one ages. The lead singer, Matty Healy, speaks from the perspective of someone who is older and has learned some lessons about life. He mentions how friends don't lie and how things all taste the same in the dark, suggesting that honesty and authenticity are important. He also mentions how one's vinyl and coffee collection can be a sign of the times, representing how one's interests and hobbies can reflect the current cultural climate. The line "you're getting spiritually enlightened at 29" suggests that there is still much to learn and discover even as one gets older.

In the second verse, Healy talks about finding a grey hair in one of his joints, referencing how aging can cause changes in one's physical appearance. He also mentions how happiness only requires one's pain and the simple act of going outside. He then speaks about a young girl named Jane who took her own life at 16, describing her as having a box tattooed on her arm. This could represent how young people feel trapped or confined, both physically and mentally. Healy then speaks about his own fears and anxieties when he was younger, representing how every individual experiences difficulties in life. The song ends with Healy reflecting on what he would say to his younger self, and the lyrics about growing a beard, whiskey not tasting nice, and getting addicted to drugs represent the mistakes and lessons he has learned along the way.

Subparticle

This song hit a lot of notes with me.. The sound and style of it is something that is really in my vibe, Giving Myself a Try is something I forgot how to do after so much time of trying to change myself.

And the lyrics to this song, alot of it followed me to a point that I'm surprised abit.

True friends don't lie, and I question how many of those actually have been friends.
I'm getting into Spiritual Enlightenment though I'm just beginning the process, and I'm turning 28 this week.

I also got STD'd at 27 which sucked ass, cured it but it definitely put a stick in my wheels for alot of stuff, especially my sexual appetite.
I had a gray hair found yesterday and my belly is slowly getting bloated and I'm worried more than ever about my health.
When I was 24/5 I was too afraid to leave my house until I made an active choice to try and change the way I'm behaving to give myself a fighting chance.

And I was definitely the kind of safe obedient kid that baby boomers like (not anymore probably)

The line of the apparatus require for happiness is pain and going outside, could never be more true for me.. Right now I'm regressing and every day I need to step outside feels painful, talking to strangers and getting ignored. It's so painful but running away from it does feel now like I'm denying myself happiness.

Yeah, growing a nice beard is work, and I absolutely still hate how Whiskey tastes, can't get over it 😂🥃

Still get to buying seeds and beans online but the way this song has been accurately describing my life, I might as well.

My own birthday is in 4 days.
Time to do some self introspection.
