The band's origins trace to their attendance at secondary school and playing together as teenagers. Initial efforts to sign with a label failed, leading to the band's manager Jamie Oborne to form Dirty Hit records. The band opened for several major acts and released a series of EPs (Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars, IV) throughout 2012 before releasing their self-titled debut album (2013), which included the popular singles "Sex", "Chocolate", and "Robbers" and reached number one in the United Kingdom.
Their second album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It (2016), reached No. 1 in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Following the touring cycle for the record, the band announced their third album under the working title of Music for Cars, before going on hiatus again throughout 2017.
Returning in 2018, the band announced that the album had evolved into their third campaign cycle, consisting of their third and fourth studio albums. The first, A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships (2018), was released to widespread critical acclaim, and became their third No. 1 album in the UK. The second, Notes on a Conditional Form, was released in May 2020 and became their fourth consecutive No. 1 album in the UK.
The 1975 has garnered acclaim for their relevant lyricism and exploration of an eclectic range of genres such as pop rock, synth-pop, R&B, electropop, new wave forms of electronic music (such as UK garage, 2-step and ambient), and forms of rock music (such as shoegaze, post-punk and post-rock), as well as elements of jazz, soul and gospel. I forgot to call you
Running low on know how
This beats made for two
'Cause I remember that I like you
No matter what I found
She said it's nice to have your friends round
We're watching a television with no sound
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
Push your lack of chest out look at my hair
Gotta love the way you love yourself
Your obsession with Rocks and Brown
And fucking the whole towns
A reflection on your mental health
'Cause I remembered when I found you
Much younger than you are now
Once it started I am friend zone
You created a television in your mouth
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
You've got something to say
Why don't speak it out loud
Instead of living in your head
It's always to say why don't you take your heart out
Instead of living in your head
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
The song Heart Out by The 1975 is about the complexities of a relationship with someone who is struggling with their emotional and mental state. The opening lines express a sense of urgency and lack of control, as the singer is in a rush and forgot to call their partner. The beats of the song are made for two, but the singer is struggling with their own emotional state, which makes relationships more complicated. Despite this struggle, the singer still likes their partner, no matter what they find. The lyrics indicate that the couple is spending time together and watching television in silence, which could indicate that they are comfortable being quiet together or that they find solace in each other's company.
The second verse of the song indicates that their partner has some self-esteem issues, as they are obsessing with their appearance and sleeping around. The singer remembers when they first met their partner, they were much younger than they are now. The lyrics indicate that the partner put the singer in the friend zone, and now they are stuck in a television in their mouth. This could indicate that their partner is not actively communicating with them and is withholding their true feelings.
The chorus of the song is the same phrase, which is talking about the complexities of a relationship, and how the singer's partner should try to figure out their heart. The bridge of the song deals with communication issues between the partners. The singer implores their partner to speak out loud instead of living in their head. The phrase "take your heart out" could indicate that their partner should be more expressive and allow their feelings to be shown instead of bottling them up. In conclusion, Heart Out is a deeply introspective look at a relationship and the struggles that come with it.

It's always to say why don't you take your heart out
It's easier said than done to be vulnerable and open
It's just you and I tonight
Only the two of us are present tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out
