Robbers
The 1975 - Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She had a face straight outta magazine
God only knows but you'll never leave her
Her balaclava is starting to chafe
When she gets his gun he's begging, babe stay, stay, stay, stay, stay

I'll give him one more time
We'll give you one more fight
Said one more lie
Will I know you

Now if you never shoot, you'll never know
And if you never eat, you'll never grow
You've got a pretty kinda dirty face
When she's leaving your home she's begging you, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay

I'll give you one more time
We'll give you one more fight
Just said one more line
There'll be a riot, 'cause I know you

Well, now that you've got your gun
It's much harder now the police have come
Now shoot him if it's what you're worth
But if you just take off your mask
To find out that everything's gone wrong, wrong, wrong

Now everybody's dead
And they're driving past my old school
And he's got his gun, he's got his suit on

She says, babe, you look so cold, you look so cold, you look so cold
You look so cold, you look so cold, you look so cold

Overall Meaning

The song "Robbers" by The 1975 is a tale of a doomed love story between two violent robbers who ultimately end up killing each other. The opening lines describe the woman as having a face straight out of a magazine and the man's obsession with her is clear when he sings that God only knows, but he'll never leave her. However, the woman hides her face behind a balaclava because of her line of work. Despite her disguise being uncomfortable, when she is given the opportunity to take the man's gun and leave him, he begs her to stay.

The chorus talks about giving the relationship one more chance and one more fight, but the man questions whether he will truly know her or if she is constantly lying to him. The second verse has two contrasting metaphors: if you never shoot, you'll never know and if you never eat, you'll never grow. The former emphasizes the risks the couple takes in their line of work and how not taking them will leave them with no answers or closure. The latter reinforces the idea that the couple is living on the edge and that the normative rules of society do not apply to them.

The climax of the song describes the couple being surrounded by the police, and the woman shooting the man despite his protests. She realizes too late that everything is wrong and that they have both lost their chance at happiness. As they both lay dying, she comments on how cold he looks, emphasizing the futility of their situation and that their love story was always destined for tragedy.

"'Robbers' is a love song. It was originally inspired by my love of the Quentin Tarantino film 'True Romance', the story of an Elvis obsessed loner who falls in love and marries a prostitute.
In the movie, the couple run away to California after killing her pimp and stealing his drugs to start a new life financed by once in a lifetime drug deal. It's the sentiment behind the film that appeals to me, the hopelessly romantic notion that two people can meet and instantly fall in love, an escape story where love is the highest law and conquers all against the odds.
Characters like Bonnie and Clyde always appealed to me as a teenager - couples so intoxicated with one another that they fear nothing in the pursuit of the realisation of each other, actions fuelled by blind unconditional love.

'Robbers' is an ode to those relationships. The type of relationship all humans long for. All or nothing.

This video is about when love makes two people feel they are the centre of the universe."

Tracy Lemons if ur referring to the spelling of the word favorite, just know The "ou" is a common British spelling, whereas in American English, we simply use the "o." For example: favourite vs. favorite. colour vs. color.
