They soon changed their name to The Adicts and became known for their distinctive Clockwork Orange 'Droog' image, which, along with their urgent, uptempo music and light-hearted lyrics, helped set them very much apart from the rest of the genre. Temporary 1980s name changes to ADX and FUN ADICTS, for a children's TV appearance, also occurred.
Their song "Viva La Revolution" was featured in the video game Tony Hawk's Underground.
The band still has all its original members, uncommon for a band with such longevity.
The music of The Adicts proves that punk music is a very broad genre, often featuring extra instruments and sound clips such as carousel music (How Sad), violin played by Derick Cook (Joker in the Pack), gongs and keyboard percussion by Anthony Boyd (Chinese Takeaway), and even completely different songs like the switch to Gain To Lose's Tune #24 at the end of G.I.R.L..
The look of the majority of the bandmates is that of the Droogs from the Stanley Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange based on the book by Anthony Burgess. All white with black combat boots and black bowler hats. The band says that the look appealed to them because of the teenage angst associated with A Clockwork Orange. Singer "Monkey" wears full joker make-up and his clothes are wild, patterned suits, flared trousers, colorful dress shirts, and other such things. His favorites seem to be checkerboard patterns, or polkadots. And of course, there's the obligatory bowler hat and gloves. Along with the look come stage antics involving streamers, confetti, playing cards, joker hats, toy instruments, and glitter just to name a few things.

The Adicts Lyrics

That makes me suspicious of you
It's my intellectual ability
That makes me do what I do
It′s up to you, it's up to me
It's up to us our dynasty
(Repeat)
It′s my emotional feelings
That makes me watch your eyes
It′s my scientific breeding
That makes me feel a rise
It's up to you, it′s up to me
It's up to us our dynasty
(Repeat)
It′s my artistic temperament
That makes me suspicious of you
It's my intellectual ability
That makes me do what I do
It′s up to you, it's up to me
It's up to us our dynasty
(Repeat 2x)
The lyrics to The Adicts's song "Dynasty" delve into the complexities of the singer's personality and how it influences their interactions with others. The opening lines, "It's my artistic temperament / That makes me suspicious of you / It's my intellectual ability / That makes me do what I do," highlight the singer's self-awareness. They attribute their suspicions towards others to their artistic temperament, which likely implies a heightened sensitivity and perception of the world. Additionally, the singer recognizes their intellectual abilities as the driving force behind their actions.
The repetition of the phrase "It's up to you, it's up to me / It's up to us our dynasty" emphasizes the concept of personal agency and shared responsibility. The singer suggests that the course of their relationships and their overall destiny relies on the choices and actions of both themselves and the other party involved. The word "dynasty" here likely symbolizes the impact they have on each other's lives and the legacy they build together.
The lyrics then mention the singer's emotional feelings, stating, "It's my emotional feelings / That makes me watch your eyes / It's my scientific breeding / That makes me feel a rise." Here, the singer draws attention to the interplay between their emotional and rational sides. Their heightened emotional awareness is indicated by their focus on the other person's eyes, suggesting a deep connection and interest. Simultaneously, their "scientific breeding" implies a calculated nature to their emotions and actions, indicating that their responses are influenced by a logical and methodical mindset.
The closing repetition of the lyrics reinforces the themes explored throughout the song. The singer's artistic temperament, intelligent reasoning, and emotional awareness continue to shape their perception of others and influence their behavior. By emphasizing the power dynamics through the repeated line, "It's up to you, it's up to me / It's up to us our dynasty," the lyrics suggest that the singer recognizes the mutual responsibility both parties have in the dynamics of their relationships. Overall, "Dynasty" encourages self-awareness, reflection, and collaboration as essential elements in building and nurturing meaningful connections.
