The band, consisting of two pairs of brothers, formed in Lanigan, Saskatchewan in 1989. The members were guitarists Ryan Dahle and Todd Kerns, bassist John Kerns and drummer Kurt Dahle. Ryan, Todd and Kurt all contributed vocals as well.
AOE were one of the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands of the mid-90s. Their commercial breakthrough came with their independent EP Ugly in 1993, which spawned several hits and set the stage for the major label release of The Age of Electric in 1995.
In 1996, the Dahle brothers released an album with the side project Limblifter, which was also commercially successful in Canada.
AOE then regrouped for Make a Pest a Pet later in 1996, which proudced the radio rock hit "Remote Control." Although the album was a hit, tensions within the band led the group to break up after a 1999 tour as the opening band for Our Lady Peace.
Upon the break-up of Age of Electric, the brothers Kerns would go on to form Static in Stereo with other members including their brother Ryan. Kurt Dahle went on to work with The New Pornographers. Todd later went solo and became the bassist in Slash's backing band The Conspirators.

I want you to live without it, To breathe without the bruises on your head
I want you to sleep without it, To sleep without the demon in your bed
I want you to live without it, To breathe without it, Without a doubt
Gotta run, Gotta run, Got to getaway
Gotta run, Gotta run, Get you somewhere safe
Gotta run, Gotta gotta getaway
Don't want you to think about it, To think about the things that he did
Don't want you to think about it, Forget about it, Without a doubt
I want you to think about yourself, Gotta get you out of your
Prison cell, There's got to be some other way, Gotta getaway
Get yourself out of your fuckin' menagerie Ah yeah, Gotta getaway
I want you to think about it, To think about think about yourself
I want you to get out of it, Get the fuck out of your spousal hell
The Age Of Electric's song Getaway is an anthem for escape from an abusive relationship. The opening verse sets the tone for the song, urging the listener to think about the things that have been said and done to them in the abusive relationship. The second half of the verse offers a sense of hope, a desire for the listener to live without the bruises on their head and the demon in their bed. The chorus then builds on this hope, with a repeated chorus of "Gotta run, Gotta run, Got to getaway" offering an escape from the abusive situation.
The second verse is a continuation of the first, with the added emphasis on not thinking about the things that have been done to them. The language shift from "I want you to" to "Don't want you to" is significant because it implies a sense of control over the situation. The language move from a more passive intention to a stricter demand. The verse then moves on to encouraging the listener to think about themselves, a reminder to the listener that they are important and deserving of a life outside of the prison cell that is their current situation.
The final verse is a message of encouragement for the listener to escape their spousal hell. The use of "get the fuck out of your" rather than "get out of your" emphasizes the frustration and urgency associated with the situation. The repeated "Gotta getaway" from the chorus emphasizes that running away is not only an option, but a necessary one.
Overall, Getaway is a powerful statement about the need for escape from an abusive relationship. It is a rallying cry for those who feel trapped and hopeless and a reminder that they are deserving of a life without violence and pain.
