Done Somebody Wrong
The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The bell has tolled
My baby caught that train and gone
The bell has tolled
My baby caught that train and gone
It's all my fault,
I must have did somebody wrong
Everything that happens
You know I am to blame
Everything that's happens
You know I am to blame
I'm wanna find me a doctor
Perhaps my luck will change

My mother she told me these days would surely come,
I wouldn't listen to her, gotta have my fun
My barrel house told, my baby caught that train and gone
It's all my fault,
I must have done somebody wrong

My barrel house told, my baby don't caught that train and gone

My barrel house told, my baby caught that train and gone
It's all my fault, I must-a did somebody wrong

Overall Meaning

The song "Done Somebody Wrong" by The Allman Brothers Band is about a man whose lover has left him, and he believes it is due to his own actions. The opening line, "The bell has tolled, my baby caught that train and gone" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The bell tolling symbolizes a death, highlighting the depth of the man's loss. Throughout the song, he takes responsibility for his actions, acknowledging that he must have done something to cause his lover to leave.

The man in the song is reflective, saying "Everything that happens, you know I am to blame." He knows that he made a mistake and is willing to accept the consequences of his actions. He seeks hope in finding a doctor to change his bad luck, suggesting that he believes that if he can change his ways, he may be able to win back his lover.

The song also carries a warning - the man's mother warned him that these days would surely come, but he did not listen. The message is that sometimes we need to listen to the advice of our elders and not always chase after what we want, as it may lead us to make mistakes that we will regret later.

Absolutely one of my favorite recordings of Duane playing slide, right up there with Statesboro Blues. He's "answering back" every line of Gregg's vocals with a slide riff, so cool. Then his solo starting at 3:00 is so freaking amazing, nobody ever played slide like that, before or since. It's just so tragic he was taken away from us so young. I was pissed when I heard the news almost 50 years ago and it still pisses me off today. But that's life. He inspired many, many guitar players like me and that's worth something. I hope he's feeling the love we all have for him.

i was soooo pssed as well ,my brother, but sadly was happy it wasn't the "voice" sorry,it be's like that sometimes..shit. life, does go on,now? we fucking lost that motherfuckng voice bruh,and...I got nothing, but God has givenus tapes BABY!

Rebel-Yell

@penny gray If there is such a thing as re-incarnation, Dwayne's spirit lives on in Derek Trucks, I surely do believe. Watching that young man play, he is truly inspired.

@Rebel-Yell Duane Allman is my favorite guitar player of all time but I'm not a fan of Derek Trucks (tho I love Susan Tedeshi). There's no denying how unbelievably talented Trucks is but (it may sound weird if you don't play guitar yourself) there is something distinctly white about Trucks slide playing. Trucks is missing the soul and the off-the-cuff feel that made Duane's playing so incredible.

Joaquin Lezcano

@PhatNana237distinctly white?

PhatNana237

@Joaquin Lezcano more structured. More technical. Lots of theory. Less feeling

One of Dickey's best solos ever. A perfect lead up to Duane's smoking slide guitar. It doesn't get any better than this. Everything about this song is Musical Perfection!

Robert Currie

Well said pure class.

Billybob Leeward

If you listen carefully it's Berry's bass that carries that whole solo...

This is a great solo from Betts but, imo, Dickey's 2nd solo in 'You Don't Love Me' off this record is not only HIS best solo ever but possibly the very best guitar solo ever recorded!!
I absolutely love Duane's slide in this tune too! When I started playing slide, my main concern was nailing Statesboro Blues (the gold standard of great slide) but now that I'm proficient, 'Done Somebody Wrong' is prob my favorite slide song to play!!
