Wasted Words
The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can you tell me, tell me, friend, just exactly where I've been?
Is that so much to ask I'll pay you back no matter what the task
You seem really sure 'bout something I don't know,
Take that load off, looks like chest's about to go
Your wasted words already been heard, are you really god, yes or no?

Well, all day and half the night you're walkin' round lookin' such a fright
Good is it me or is it you?
I'd make a wager and I'd hope you lose
Time's gone, looks like Rome is 'bout to fall,
Next time take the elevator, please don't crawl
Your wasted words so absurd, are you really Satan, yes or no?
Tell me now baby?
Ooh hoo
Oh

Well, I ain't no saint and you sure as hell ain't no savior
Every other Christmas I would practice good behavior
That was then, this is now, don't ask me to be mister clean
Baby, I don't know how
Ring my phone 'bout ten more times, we will see,
Find that broke down line and let it be
Your wasted words will never be heard, go on home baby and watch it on TV

Weekday soap-box specialty, you know what I'm talkin' 'bout now
By the way, this song's for you, sincerely, me

Overall Meaning

In the song "Wasted Words" by The Allman Brothers Band, the songwriter is grappling with the notions of truth, morality, and communication. The song conveys a sense of frustration with someone who is trying to offer advice or insight but seems to be speaking in "wasted words." The singer requests that the friend be more specific about where he's been and what he knows, seemingly calling into question the validity of his words. The friend is portrayed as confident in his perspective, causing the singer to ask if he is really "god" or "Satan," suggesting a larger moral question is at play.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of time running out, with a reference to Rome about to fall and the lyrics "Time's gone." The singer also makes a reference to giving up on trying to be a "mister clean," either accepting a certain level of moral ambiguity or rejecting the notion that anyone can live up to such lofty ideals. In the end, the singer seems to dismiss the friend's words entirely, telling him to go home and watch TV instead.

Overall, the song "Wasted Words" is a commentary on the limitations of language and communication. The singer questions whether people can truly understand one another, whether there is any way to discern the truth from insincere words, and whether it's even worth trying to do so.

This is a great album. Duane Allman is 1 of my absolute favorite guitar players & there is no replacing him period but Dickie Betts & Les Dudek play some unbelievable guitar on this album. 1 of my favorites to jam along with on my guitar for the last 38 years✌️🎸

In 1991 I saw Stevie Nicks in L.A. & Les Dudek was playing guitar & he was just unreal. She turned him loose. I didn’t really want to go but I was happy I did because the band she had backing her up were great & I didn’t know it was him on guitar until she announced it. Awesome concert 🎸

@Brad Haddad About 4 years ago I tried to post Dudek's album "Say No More" with Old Judge Jones on it (whole album is great!) from the original vinyl. It was up for a week or two until he or his people saw it and YouTube pulled it off my channel. Then I got hit with a copyright strike and wasn't able to post anything for a month. I had to repent and was eventually reinstated.

So great to discover what this GOAT band did after the tragic loss of Duane. RIP ABB.

Love this album!!

Brothers and Sisters is my favorite Allman Brothers album. After this they basically retreated to the nostalgia touring.

When this album hit No. 1 they became superstars and the money and drugs poured in, eventually causing numerous issues within the band that signalled the beginning of the end...
