You and I
The Ames Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My story is much to sad to be told
But practically everything leaves me totally cold
The only exception I know is the case
When I'm out on a quiet spree, fighting vainly the old ennui
And I suddenly turn and see your fabulous face

I get no kick from champagne
Mere alcohol doesn't thrill me at all
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you

Some get a kick from cocaine
I'm sure that if I took even one sniff
That would bore me terrifically too
But I get a kick out of you

I get a kick every time I see you standing there before me
I get a kick though it's clear to me, you obviously don't adore me
I get no kick in a plane, flying too high with some guy in the sky
Is my idea of nothing to do, yet I get a kick out of you

I get a kick every time I see you standing there before me
I get a kick though it's clear to me, you obviously don't adore me
I get no kick in a plane, flying too high with some guy in the sky
Is my idea of nothing to do, yet I get a kick out of you

I get a kick out of you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Ames Brothers's song "You and I" reflect the singer's complex emotions and the unique joy they find in a particular person's presence. The opening lines suggest that the singer has experienced a lot of sadness in their life, perhaps due to difficult or painful experiences. However, they feel unaffected or indifferent towards most things, indicating a general sense of apathy. The lyrics emphasize that the only exception to this indifference is when the singer encounters the person they are singing about.

The lyrics go on to express that the singer does not find excitement or pleasure in the typical sources of enjoyment for others. They mention that champagne and alcohol do not thrill them, implying that they do not find solace in indulgence or excess. They also mention cocaine, suggesting that they do not get any kick out of substance use either. However, despite this, when they see the person they are addressing, they feel a sense of excitement and enjoyment, contrasting their lack of interest in other activities.

The lyrics convey a bittersweet feeling as the singer acknowledges that the person they admire does not reciprocate their affection. They emphasize that despite this one-sidedness, they still feel a kick or thrill whenever they see the person. It is as if their mere presence brings them joy, even though the person may not feel the same way.

The final repetition of the phrase "I get a kick out of you" reinforces the singer's message. It suggests that even though they may not have a conventional love story or a reciprocated love, they find genuine happiness and excitement in the presence of this person. The lyrics overall convey a complex mix of emotions, where the singer's joy and excitement coexist with their awareness of the unrequited nature of their affection.

You you you,
I'm in love with you you you,
I could be so true true true
To someone like you you you.
Do do do what you ought to do do do,
Take me in your arms please do,
Let me cling to you you you.
We were meant for each other
To have to hold and to love.
You you you, there's no one like you you you,
You could make my dreams come true
If you say you love me too.
You you you,
I'm in love with you you you,
I could be so true true true
To someone like you you you.
Do do do what you ought…

As a high school junior, I remember this song being played at our Junior-Senior Prom in our high school gym.... the lyrics fairly echoed through the gym, it was beautiful and magical. I am now 82, still married to my then, 15 year-old sweet heart and this beautiful song reminds me of our youth and wonderful life together!

I was a sophomore… I remember dancing with my girlfriend at the winter formal. Tragically she died in automobile accident before we graduated school . This song reminds me of her . I wonder what could have been had we stayed together and married

This was my parents favorite song. They would sing every night before going to sleep. We even played at my daddy's funeral. 💞💟

This was the very first song I learned to sing when I was 12 months old....but could only sing, "You, you, you"...my Mom wrote it on the back of my birth card , noting all the things I was learning to do since my birth!🥰
