The Andrews Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Holding hands at midnight
'Neath a starry sky
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try

Strolling with the one boy
Sighing sigh after sigh
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?

Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow
Nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, oh won't you tell me how?

I'm holdin' hands at midnight
'Neath a starry sky
Oh my, oh my, oh my

I feel to start perfect though
Hold on thinkin' of the one I love
I don't know and I don't care
I feel as though floatin' on air
Floatin' through the skies above
'Cause I'm thinkin' of the one that I love

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door

Holdin' hands at midnight
'Neath a starry sky
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try

Strollin' with the one boy
Sighin' sigh after sigh
That's good work if you try

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?

Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow
That's called nice work
That's called nice work
If you can get it

That's nice work

Overall Meaning

The song "Nice Work If You Can Get It" by The Andrews Sisters is a classic ode to love and romance. The first verse paints a serene picture of two lovers holding hands under a starry sky. The chorus emphasizes that having a love like this is "nice work if you can get it" and that it is possible if one tries. The second verse portrays the feeling of being elated and carefree, "Floatin' through the skies above" because of the joy of being in love. The bridge describes the alluring idea of someone waiting for you at the cottage door who loves you just as much as you do. The final chorus repeats the message of the previous ones that finding and keeping a love like this is hard work, but it is definitely worth it.

My Great Aunt Bessie was one of the first women to enlist in the Women's Army Corp (WACs) in 1943. I wrote a thesis about her when I was in college in 1982. She died in 2010 at age 103. She was my hero!!!!!!

@teller121

as well she ought to be.  Mine, too, and I never met her...sadly.

Take a closer look...the uniforms Patty/Maxine/Lavern wore were 'military-style' but NOT actually military.None of them were ever actually 'enlisted-in-service' ...despite that, they were just as 'serving' as any other women during WW2 and personally recognized by FDR as 'vital to the morale of the armed-forces and civilians as well" and received commendations from the President himself! (the hours they put in performing on every 'Front' during the war was incredible...Maxine said in the '60's that "We didn't have a day-off for over two years...but we didn't mind so much when we saw what those boys went through and how happy they were to see a live-show from us and everyone else...I never heard of any performer ever complaining of 'working' then...we saw it as a privilege to help them forget the War for awhile".   (not well-known was the fact that "Andrews Sisters" were enormously popular in Germany itself...even during the War! Their records were 'officially banned' of course...but they were highly prized, even being traded for 'black-market' items like real cigarettes  and liquor)

Wow. God bless her
