Overall Meaning

The Angels' song "Shadow Boxer" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of living a life of isolation and fear. The lyrics address someone who is afraid to take any risks, who hides away from the world, and who has lost all sense of purpose or hope. The title "Shadow Boxer" refers to someone who is constantly fighting shadows and imaginary adversaries, never able to confront their real fears.

The lyrics convey a sense of despair and hopelessness, as the singer is trapped in a cycle of fear and paranoia. The imagery of empty books, ticking clocks, and empty rooms reinforces this sense of emptiness and isolation. The final warning to "watch out when you're all alone" and the reference to turning into stone suggests that this lifestyle is ultimately self-destructive.

Overall, the song warns against the dangers of living a life without risk or connection, and suggests that we need to take chances and reach out to others in order to find meaning and purpose.

I had this playing on my car tape deck in the early 1990s. I always thought it was catchy as hell. Giving it a re-listen it is deceptively complex song.
