The Drive
The Animators Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

you take the wheel, i don't know how long i've been driving
have another drink, another cigarette, to settle you down
only twenty-four hours to go, if we stay on 'till morning
so keep your eyes on the road
breathe deep but don't make a sound

from what i recall, this was the time of our lives then
even thirty-six hours awake couldn't settle us down
believe what you want — i never said i wasn't ready
so keep your hands on the wheel
look back but don't turn around

i live alone in a beautiful home
there's only so much to see
but you still look amazing to me
fever pitch is coming
the crowds are stampeding
nobody's making a sound
when the world still looks amazing on the way down

the faster we went, the days only seemed to get longer
even red and white lights in the rearview weren't slowing us down
the seatbelts, the airbags, the rollbars all waiting and ready
but i didn't know you could crash just by staring at the ground

i live alone in a beautiful home
there's only so much to see
but you still look amazing on TV
fever pitch is coming
the crowds are stampeding
nobody's making a sound
when the world still looks amazing on the way down

so just tell me the truth:
should i do what i'm told?
did we get there on time?
should i have the car towed?
am i just growing up
or am i growing old?

am i growing old?
am i growing old?

Overall Meaning

The Animators’ song “The Drive” is about a road trip that the singer and someone else are taking. The song implies that the other person in the car is in need of some sort of calming substance, perhaps because the reality of their situation is setting in as they get closer to their destination. The singer, who has been driving for an unknown amount of time, relinquishes control to the other person and tries to relax for the last stretch of their journey. Despite the risks of driving while fatigued, they seem determined to make it to their destination.

The song then shifts to the present tense, indicating that the road trip was in the past. The singer is now living alone in a beautiful home, and seems to be reflecting on the road trip with fondness. However, there seems to be a sense of melancholy as well, as indicated by the line “there’s only so much to see”. The singer then imagines the world in chaos as they come “crashing” down from their high, but still finds beauty in it.

Overall, “The Drive” explores the themes of nostalgia, the passage of time, and the bittersweet nature of memories. The song has a dreamy, wistful quality to it that suits the subject matter well.

@inkchip7351

Lydia Grace we have the same name and the same goals... Sister, are you my twin?

For real tho I'm just a director but some day the rat will bow to me!

@pinkiepurplez

We're rats, we're rats, we're da rats. We snoop at night, we stalk at night. WE'RE DA RATS!
And I am the giant rat that makes ALL. OF. THE. RULES. Let's see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into!

@inyuji

I really needed to hear this because I needed to remind myself that outs okay if my ambitions are not in par with everyone else and that my interests will change with time

@FrancisChenSF

Toniko, this is one of the most best and balanced videos regarding different career paths in animation / entertainment, and what types of personality traits are needed or will do well in each path. Different personalities will thrive in different paths more than others, and I'm so glad you're providing a set of vocabulary and guidelines regarding the trade-offs of each path. Ultimately, it definitely comes down to the type of lifestyle one feels more comfortable with, at the end of the day.

@caroodraws

Also? Your animation and personal projects hit me really hard. I love how your lines are textured and alive, and I always see so much light in the eyes of your characters. Your stuff really inspires me and makes me want to animate in my own personal way, not be like whoever I think is good.

@cindyespindola4946

idk why am I seeing this, I'm a computer engineering student that has just made really simple little animations and like making realism drawings😅 But I like hearing people talk about their careers, creative process, proyects and specially about their passions 😁

@teacoston

This truly came at the right time

@rodellolorio2668

Same

@CydoniaOS

I love this. I think I'm alright with art and I really enjoy all aspects of it, animation included. People tend to look at me funny when I say that I'd be happy working as either an artist or in a flower show. TBH all that matters to me is that I can live making things I enjoy.
