Dawn
The Antiques Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For no reason at all
You keep breaking our hearts
For no reason at all
Oh, it dawns on me
That what I know
Is what I chose to see
Now the coast is clear ahead of me
Without a plan to where I'll be
With no reason I can see
No reason I can see
So let's all come clean
Like a thread, pull together, pull the seam
You pull it through, you pull on me, and I'll on you
And I keep making this hard
For no reason at all
No reason at all
The Antiques's song "Dawn" is a reflective piece on how the hardness of life often stems from the decisions we choose to make. The first two lines speak about how there is no specific reason that the difficulties exist, they just do. The next two lines shift focus to the idea of heartbreak, where the subject of the song is trying to come to terms with the fact that they are hurting and maybe they are contributing to it. The line "oh, it dawns on me" acts as a pivotal moment in the song where it feels like the singer is coming to an epiphany. They realize that what they know and how they view their situation is entirely subjective, it's what they choose to see.
The next few lines describe a sense of loneliness and aimlessness in life. They wish they had a plan or a reason to push forward, but they don't. This sense of desolation is a recurring theme throughout the piece, as the subject looks for ways to connect or feel less lost. The chorus offers a solution to this problem. The step towards a better place is to "come clean," be honest with oneself and others, and to work together like a strong thread. The lines "You pull it through, you pull on me, and I'll on you," emphasize that there is strength in numbers, and that we don't have to do everything alone. The song ends with the same lines from the beginning, but they now have a different meaning, seeking to resolve the hardships that they previously described.
Line by Line Meaning
We keep making this hard
We are intentionally making things difficult for ourselves
For no reason at all
Without any valid justification
You keep breaking our hearts
You keep causing us emotional pain
Oh, it dawns on me
I suddenly realize
That what I know
My understanding of the situation
Is what I chose to see
Is limited and influenced by my own biases
Now the coast is clear ahead of me
Now I have a clear path forward
But it's lonesome here
Although I have clarity, it's still a lonely place
Without a plan to where I'll be
Without a clear destination in sight
With no reason I can see
Without any apparent justification
No reason I can see
Again emphasizing the lack of rational explanation
So let's all come clean
Let's be honest with ourselves and each other
Like a thread, pull together, pull the seam
Work together to mend what is broken
You pull it through, you pull on me, and I'll on you
We must collaborate and rely on each other to move forward
And I keep making this hard
I am still contributing to the difficulty
For no reason at all
Again emphasizing the lack of rational explanation
