The Apples in Stereo currently consist of Robert Schneider (vocals, guitar), Eric Allen (bass), John Hill (rhythm guitar), John Ferguson (keyboards) and John Dufilho. Schneider writes the most of the band's music and lyrics. Their debut release was 1995's Fun Trick Noisemaker (with Jim McIntyre on bass).
Longtime drummer Hilarie Sydney left the band in 2006, performing her last show at the Athens Popfestival.
Robert Schneider has side projects: Marbles, Ulysses, Thee American Revolution and a new kids music project under the name Robbert Bobbert & The Bubble Machine. He does a lot of commercial composition and film score work.
John Hill also plays guitar in Dressy Bessy.
Bill Doss, who had been the band's keyboardist since 2007, died on July 30, 2012. Doss was also the singer, songwriter and guitarist for The Olivia Tremor Control, the sole member of The Sunshine Fix, and an original member of the Elephant 6 collective.
One of their most popular songs, "Signal In The Sky," was created for and featured in episode 46 of The Powerpuff Girls.
They are best known for their bright, catchy lyrics and 60s pop/rock sound that often provokes comparisons to The Beatles, ELO and The Beach Boys.
Their major influences include The Velvet Underground and The Beach Boys.
Stay Gold

Empty into the weight of anything, my love
If we should fly away
But we will someday
I look into the ocean
And that the big blue ocean always changing
Never stays the same
I'll always be there for you
Where as constant as the sun
Until it burns down slowly
No matter what we've ever done
Still trees are firmly planted
While our views of life are granted
Only to the ones who gone aways
Til the break of day
I'll always be there for you
Where as constant as the sun
Until it burns down slowly
No matter what we've ever done
The stars are always shining
While the world is sadly planning
For something so meaningless and small
Who would let them fall
I'll always be there for you
Where as constant as the sun
Until it burns down slowly
No matter what we've ever done
You'll always stand there
When they melt into the sun
Your eyes have seen the sunlight
The Apples In Stereo's song Stay Gold talks about the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing the moments, the people, and the places that give it meaning. The opening lines of the song paint a picture of some places that are so empty and insignificant that they just fall through the spaces and disappear into the weight of anything. In contrast, the singer and their loved one want to fly away but accept that they will stay and make the best of what they have. They look into the ocean and its big blue expanse that is always changing, never staying the same. The ocean whispers their name, reminding them that like the ocean, life is ephemeral and unpredictable.
In the next verse, the singer reflects on how still trees remain while our views of life keep changing. Trees are a symbol of resilience, stability, and longevity. In contrast, humans are fickle, and their perceptions of life are subjective and subject to change. The singer vows to be there for their loved one, as constant as the sun, until it burns down slowly. They acknowledge that no matter what they have done or will do, they will always be there for each other. The stars are always shining, reminding us of the grandeur of the universe and the smallness of our everyday worries and plans. The world may plan for something meaningless and small, but we should not allow it to let the stars fall.
The song Stay Gold urges the listener to appreciate every moment of life and to value the people and the places that enrich it. It encourages us to be there for each other, to be constant and reliable, and to maintain a sense of wonder and awe in the face of the cosmos.
