If you ever do encounter a shark, here’s what to actually do.
1. Always keep your eyes on the shark make sure he knows you see him and don’t move rapidly, he could just be checking you out not meaning any harm.

But if the shark is sort moving quite fast around you, it’s showing signs of aggression and you need to back off.
Still keep your eyes on the shark and slowly and calmly swim back to shore.

But let’s say you got bitten, what you do? First either hit it in the eye, nose or stick your hands in its gils, that are some of the most sensitive parts forcing the shark to let you go. If for some reason he didn’t keep hitting until he does.

I once had an encounter with a shark in Santa Cruz, CA; and it wasn't a nice experience either. To date, I still celebrate my life and cannot understand how on that day I didn't lose my life. Needless to say that I never went back on a surfing board and never will for that matter.

I am very sorry and sad for the lives that were lost to this 2nd apex predator, on that day and until now, I always rejoice when Orcas bring down this mighty beast!

i almost drowned in a swimming pool when i was 14. My wife taught our kids to swim at the hotel's pool where I worked when they were like middle school. I would sit and wiggle my feet from the edge. phuck water deeper than 7 inches ! and definitely to hell with a basin of splash.....

When Mick Fanning was attacked the other surfer he was competing against had seen the attack and swam straight towards Mick to help! He didn't swim away or go to safety, he went towards the shark to help his friend. That bloke is a legend, wish I knew his name. You can see him in the footage cruising by on his board in the red rashy. He is brave and a great person and friend.

I feel so bad for all these people. It is ironic somehow that I went snorkeling at the Seychelles just like the unlucky honeymooners. I did it because I - like them- was told by locals that it is not dangerous at all because the sea is full of fish and the sharks are never hungry. Also if you are swimming in shallow water and you feel a nudge on your waist to your thigh, it could be a shark so react by punching the sharks nose, it shows that you are not dead, they usually nudge people to see if you are dead so react calming punch the shark in the nose that is the most sensitive spot on a shark. They then usually swim away.

I was swinniming in the coast off of South Africa when I was attacked by a 17 ft Great white shark. It headed straight for me when I noticed 3

The next two came in for there attacks frome either side at which point I gave the larger of the two z judo chop nearly cutting it in half. The last one unsure about what to do decided to attack in case I really decided to get mad. So I swam along side him putting him cross faced chicken wing breaking jib dorsal fin and knock at the same instance. No mention of the absolutely worst attack I know of and that is the Lew Boren attack near Pacific Grove , CA on 12/19/1981. The shark bit through both him and his kneeboard leaving a bite mark on his torso that stretched from just under his arm to his hip nearly cutting him in half. The shark that did the deed was estimated to be over 21 ft long .

Its not considered a shark attack because we are technically in there territory so it means that they are defending themselves in the most violent way. A shark attack is almost impossible because that means the shark will have to come out of the water and past shore and then attack someone once in our territory, for example, imagine a shark going so far onto shore that they are in someones back yard (if they live really close to the beach) and then so killed them, that is considered a shark attack

There was footage from the filming of an Australian soap opera in the late 60s/early 70s, where a TV actor got killed. I haven't seen that footage in like 40 years, but it's ten times better/more graphic interesting than anything shark-related on YouTube now. That man made some very high-pitched sounds as he died. It's great that the clip was removed from TV circulation back in the day, presumably out of respect for the man's family, but it's 2021, and I think it should be re-released.

Yes it’s super unfortunate and sad that these people had to go through this but sharks are not these mean cruel animals they simply probably thought there where prey or a threat, the best way to survive a shark attack is not slash and hit it in the gills. Everytime a sharks attacks someone people think it’s ok to just kill them... that’s not right. But if course people don’t diserve to die for a shark but neither does the shark. I'm not from here! I'm from the more friendly looking beaches in OC!
When I moved here, then saw the ocean which actually LOOKS OMINOUSLY DANGEROUS, and gray and vast from the shore, plus it's FREEZING, I told my children not to go in it!! I just had a really bad feeling, and I'd never had a bad feeling before about a beach! Then, the next day, when the guy came to turn on our water, I told him about my feeling, and he said to not ever let your kids go in the water at Marina beach, past their knees! He said the strong current and waves will PULL you out to the ocean, and most can't get back to shore!! Woah! Now I know where the ominous feeling came from! The beaches all over here have strong current and rip-tide warnings! Then, today, I learn from this video that there was a fatal shark attack from a great white only 10 years before we moved here on the very beach that I only live 1/3 mile away from!! No wonder no one swims here at this beach! Ominous! Usually its windy and cold, which has created HUGE sand dunes, so there's no way we can even see the ocean! That's why the real estate is relatively cheap around here! Though I'm not a home-owner, I only pay rent. Now I know why the military wanted this area! Almost no one swims in the ocean in Marina OR Seaside, either! ...I'm going back home to OC asap!!!

I know exactly what you are talking about. Generations since 1890's of my family are from and in Monterey. I am not anymore but used to run Del Monte Beach for years. Great Whites are all over the place as you know.Marina, Seaside and Monastery Beach,Carmel are extremely deceptive visually. My great grandfather was a Portuguese fishermen for decades and always told us to NEVER GO IN SWIMMING He purposely did not teach my grandmother how to swim. Even Del Monte Beach is dicey the water has never been warm. My dad was crazy enough to surf all over that bay and surfed over a great white. He still went in no fear ever. My grandfather had a shop on Cannery Row for decades.He had a boat slip in Monterey and we would go on his boat it was big boat and I would only go out on calm days which aren't very common. The tides are unpredictable, cold and dangerous. The only neat thing about this areas the Otters. Even in the hills of Monterey where I ran after enough of the beach, Mountain Lions freaking everywhere especially off hwy 68. Eventually got a treadmill much safer than Monterey bay or the hills surrounding. Great thing about Nevada no humidity no sharks and Lake Tahoe is pretty safe, just have to be aware of the bears at King's Beach near Tahoe. One was in a Safeway recently he ran in got a bag of chips and ran out then hit a gas station super store down the road he's hit that one five times all on camera.

Although it is sad to hear about these attacks, but just remember, sharks are VERY important for us as well they help to prevent this thing called harmful agal bloom that will kill almost anything that breaths or swims in it so we have to really thank them for that. Also when sharks attack it’s either mistaken identity, they’re pupping (giving birth) or mating. And dolphins are really the monsters we should be afraid of, they kill for sport and sometimes even their own kind for no reason, they also like to “play” with things they kill themselves, don’t get me wrong, dolphins are still beautiful creaturesbut just remember sharks aren’t monsters we make them to be, it’s more of dolphins.

I was swimming a few weeks ago at orange beach and I felt something touch my leg it was a sand shark like 3 foot long Sand shark I have never been so scared in my entire life

I’m actually surprised that most of the attacks were from Great White sharks, because Great Whites are honestly pretty chill, and usually only attack humans by accident, thinking they are seals. The shark that would most likely attack a person is the bull shark, they are pretty territorial, and most shark attacks are from them.

Was rammed by a shark while surfing in san diego lifted me out of the water, was so frightening the gunboat Coast Guard boat came to me i tried to climb aboard but wasnt allowed they told me to swim to shore while they manned the gun! Ive had killer whales come right up to me and its not like Seaworld!! Lived in Miami Beach for 20 years and seen many sharks but not like the ones in Cali!! Its so crazy because while these things happened i always thought how endangered we all were i still go in the water but never so deep that i dont have a fightining chance to at least have a proper burial.

When you swim in the shark's kitchen, you are asking for trouble! However, in the whole world, there are only about 75 shark attacks per year, but who wants even one! I lived on the Coastside for 30+ years and did a lot of diving. But at that time, sharks were NOT noted for attacking in shallow waters like they are now. I saw nurse sharks all the time, resting on the bottom usually, but I knew I was taking a chance with the Great Whites!
Of the sharks that attack humans the most, the Great White, the Bull, and the Tiger are; the most dangerous, but even white-tip or black-tip reef sharks can hunt in packs and be dangerous. Bull Sharks are known to swim 1,000 miles up the Mississippi River, they CAN adapt to fresh water.
To lessen the chance of a shark attack, stay out of the water at dusk and dawn. Never go into the water with a cut or sore, sharks can smell human excretions 3 miles away. Don't splash excessively around on top of the water, you will seem like wounded prey to the shark! Know shark behavior for the area where you are; carry a weapon like a shark-stick if you are spear-fishing which is a dangerous thing to do! Don't wear flashy bright-colored swim-wear, stick to dull colors and don't wear jewelry in the water, the shiny objects can reflect sunlight and sparkle and can interest a shark! Shark attacks are pretty rare, but who wants to take a chance and tempt disaster!

It's actually been proven that the whole sharks can smell human blood in whatever amount in however much water is not a true thing!!! If there was a fish and it was bleeding out, that's a whole different story. Humans are not, I repeat ARE NOT, on the radar of sharks as something delicious to eat, whereas fish are on their menu.... You get some fish blood in the water the schooling fish will be the first to go after it which then in turn attracts bigger fish which attract sharks!!! Pretty sure we have all been told/have heard all of our lives that human blood in water will attract sharks, I know I was guilty, so I just wanted to drop that knowledge on everyone lol. I am in absolutely no way what so ever trying to say or imply that I'm smarter or know everything/know more about sharks or marine life than anyone!

@Kelsie Womble You need to do some authentic research from RECENT authentic scientific sources! You are not only wrong about sharks being able to sense blood in the water, they also sense urine and MAYBE even the amount of fat on a "possible" prey! They don't smell it through a nose, they get their messaged from their "lateral line' and ampullae of Lorenzini, which are special sensing organs called electroreceptors, forming a network of jelly-filled pores. it i these organs that provide the information to sharks, to enable them to detect prey, however, sharks are opportunistic feeders, and they may bump a prey to enhance these sensing organs, then they retreat to come up fast from below and then seriously bite the prey. Their "MO" is to bite the prey, shake their head back and forth so their serrated teeth (on both sides of the tooth) will tear out a chunk or at least sever blood vessels so that the prey bleeds out and becomes unable to injure them as they go in for the meal. They also can roll their eyes back under a membrane to protect them as they make their BITE! (Favorite prey is seals/sea lions and they have claws and sharp fangs that could injure the shark, thus their special technique for getting their prey.
There is LOT we still do not know about sharks, but scientists ARE LEARNING more and more all the time. Best to stay out of the water at dusk and dawn, which is when they are seriously feeding, but they may attempt to predate at any time, if they are hungry! Don't go into the water with an open wound, and don't splash around on the surface and look/act like wounded prey! And don't wear shiny jewelry, which can appear like a flashy fish's scales in the sunlight! Shark attacks are rare, but they DO OCCUR, so it's best to try to avoid them in their ocean! (Bull sharks are the only dangerous shark that goes into fresh water (Mississippi in the U.S.) but many species of sharks will hang around where the mouth of a river empties into the ocean, because the river current can bring things they can feed on into the ocean.)
