Intervention
The Arcade Fire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The king's taken back the throne
The useless seed was sown
When they say they're cutting off the phone
Then tell 'em you're not home

No place to hide
You'll find there's a soldier on their side
You're still a soldier in your mind
But nothing's on the line

You say it's money that we need
As if we're the only mouths to feed
I know that no matter what you say
There are some debts we never pay

Working for the church while your family dies
You take what they give you
And you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone

I can taste the fear
Lift me up and take me out of here
Don't want to fight, don't want to die
Just want to hear you cry

Who's gonna throw the very first stone
Oh, who's gonna re set the bone
Walking with your hand in a sling
Wanna hear the soldier sing

Working for the church while my family dies
You're little baby sister's gonna lose her mind
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone

I can taste your fear
It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here
If the bone shot never heals
I cannot make him yield

You can't find me now
But they're gonna get their money back somehow
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here

Been working for the church while your life falls apart
They're singing hallelujah when defeating your heart
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home

Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone

Overall Meaning

The Arcade Fire's song "Intervention" is a politically charged song that critiques the role of organized religion in society. The opening line "The king's taken back the throne, the useless seed was sown" refers to the futility of the power struggle that has taken place in society. The line "working for the church while your family dies" is a scathing critique of how people can become so invested in religion that they neglect their own families. The song's overall message is that people need to be conscious of the power they are giving to institutions and organizations, and that they need to hold these organizations accountable when they stray from their values. The line "every spark of friendship and love will die without a home" is particularly poignant in this regard, as it underscores the importance of human connection and the need for people to build communities outside of institutions.

The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, with the repetition of the line "hear the soldier groan we'll got it alone." This line serves as a warning against the dangers of blindly following authority, and the need for people to stand up for each other in times of hardship. The line "I can taste your fear, it's gonna lift you up and take you out of here" is a call to arms, urging people to take action in order to protect themselves and the people they care about.

Overall, "Intervention" is a powerful song that critiques the role of institutions and organizations in society, and emphasizes the importance of human connection and community. It is a call to arms for people to stand up for what they believe in and to be conscious of the power dynamics at play in their lives.

One of my favourite Arcade Fire songs. So much anger in it.

@lotuseater7247

desperation

@leannamacfarlane4288

Ha! I know, right?

@EffortlessQigong

Hmm, it’s more a call to action in the face of pain and fear

@FlamingZelda3

@Jared Dempsey - Effortless Qigong definitely not a call to action. It's the anger and desperation at the pointlessness of it all even after having made the call to action. It doesn't matter that he gave up everything, that he sacrificed himself like a soldier or a monk, it all ends in death and destruction because the powers that be are reckless, incompetent, or just plain wicked.

@ToneSoCooL3

This album Totally reminds me of Bruce Springsteen, I even saw he covered one song off it.
