Avalanche
The Armoury Show Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Understanding the promises
That drift away - they drift away
Nothing to share in low water
Over above an avalanche she falls away
This summer - some are August
Crying far air not to be had
More than enough move to the side
Watch him pass he passes by he gets away
If I could lose myself and dream away
Day upon day upon day upon day
In an avalanche she drifts away
Over its over its over its over
I wish we could be together again
Like a play on words
The Armoury Show's song "Avalanche" portrays the theme of lofty promises not being fulfilled in a relationship, as well as the conflicting feelings of being pulled towards and pushed away from a lover. The lyrics in the first verse, "This is summer - some are watching, Understanding the promises that drift away - they drift away, Nothing to share in low water, Over above an avalanche she falls away," suggest that the summer represents the time of promises made, but that they inevitably drift away, leaving the singer feeling alone and helpless. The line "over above an avalanche she falls away" highlights the sudden feeling of the relationship collapsing, like the weight of an avalanche.
The second verse "This summer - some are August, Crying far air not to be had, Is this the way is this this the way, More than enough move to the side, Watch him pass he passes by he gets away" portrays the desperation and confusion felt by the singer, as they bring up the metaphor of August being the end of summer and crying for something that cannot be had. The line "More than enough move to the side" suggests that the singer has been left alone as people move on in their lives while they still try to hold onto their relationship. The line "Watch him pass he passes by he gets away" shows the singer's yearning for their partner to stay, but they leave nevertheless.
The chorus serves as a sort of mantra - "If I could lose myself and dream away, Day upon day upon day upon day, In an avalanche she drifts away, Over it's over it's over it's over, I wish we could be together again like a play on words." The repetitive text alludes to the singer's longing to escape the reality of the relationship and to be transported into a dream world where everything is as it should be. The line "Over it's over it's over it's over" reinforces the idea that the relationship has ended for good, but in the final line "I wish we could be together again like a play on words," there is a sense of hope that the singer still has feelings for their partner and is willing to make amends.

I love the Armoury Show.
@evilrobottolhurst
What a great tune. I thought of the lyrics "Wish We Could Be Together" to Badly Drawn Boy's "Silent Sigh"(watch?v=NY-oQEy1KFU) today but it took a while to hunt down this tune. I can't understand why this video does not have tens of thousands of views. Then again, the audience (varying between "Gregory's Girl" cardigans and "Local Hero" red hair) may have been expecting "Into the Valley"...

Still a great tune five years later. Still can't search for it on "we could be good together" or anything like that....
