Please Don't Turn Me On
The Artful Dodger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mmm-hmm
I mean it (I mean it)
Don't say it, babe (don't say it, babe)
Hear me now now
Said ah, please don't turn me on
No, no listen, listen

Baby, won't you keep your distance
You're getting too close to me
I've been feeling my resistance
Melting away
But she said she wouldn't mind
If I spent a little time
Said you were a friend of mine
She could trust me out of sight

Now two bottles later on
And I think I stayed too long
I forget where I belong
Saying please don't turn me on

It's getting late I know I should be gone
Don't push me 'cause I'm not that strong (no, no, no, no)
You can never make it right from wrong (no, no, no, no)
Please don't touch me there
Stop playing with my mind it's not fair
When you know I've got another who cares
And she's waiting for me somewhere out there, yeah

Don't say my love is too familiar
'Cause she's everything to me
Don't say what she don't know won't kill her (ooh)
I'm playing away
Put your hands where I can see
Baby, you know what I mean
'Cause you're looking good to me
And you know I feel the heat
As you button up your dress
And I wake up in your bed
With a head full of regrets
Saying please don't turn me on

It's getting late I know I should be gone?
Don't want to lose the love I have
'Cause once it's gone can't take it back
You know that I want to
Doesn't matter what I hear you say
I see the look that's in your eyes (no, no)
Please don't turn me on

It's getting late I know I should be gone (I should be gone)?
It's getting late I know I should be gone?

Overall Meaning

The Artful Dodger's "Please Don't Turn Me On" is a song about temptation, indulgence, and the struggle to resist it. The singer is asking his lover to keep her distance because he knows that he's getting too close and losing control of himself. He's been feeling his resistance melting away, and he's afraid that he'll give in to his desires if she doesn't stop playing with his emotions.

The first verse sets up the scenario of the singer being tempted by his lover. She trusts him, and he's been spending time with her, but he knows that he shouldn't be getting too close. In the chorus, he pleads with her not to turn him on because he doesn't want to be unfaithful to his actual girlfriend. He knows that he's weak, and that if she keeps pushing him, he won't be able to resist.

In the second verse, the singer tries to rationalize his behavior by saying that his girlfriend doesn't need to know what's going on. But he also admits that he's playing with fire and that he has regrets about his actions. The chorus repeats, with the singer pleading for his lover not to turn him on, but this time with an added sense of urgency. He doesn't want to lose the love he has, but he's afraid that he will if he can't resist his temptations.

This should have been as big a hit as Craig David Please Rewind, never understood why there wasn't as much airplay for this.

Hulk2k6

Reached #4 in the UK and got played on Kiss, Capital, Choice (before it became Capital Extra) and all those stations quite a bit.

Hulk2k6

+FiftyCaliberTV Kisstory only play it Early Morning and if you're lucky, Afternoon

Hulk2k6

Nope, It's rare to hear it in the during the Afternoon and Evening seshes, depending on who's the DJ. Believe me, I use Planet Radio's catchup service for Kisstory and often FFWD through entire episodes for my fave jams and often find it in the earlier slots.

My favourite garage anthem off all time!! A early 2000s classic. 👏🏾👍🏾💯👌🏾😍

Max Gorst

Absolute tune. Always so hard to hear and get hold of too. Never understood why

Hulk2k6

Guess you missed out on the early airplay but you're right as it's sporadically played these days. Kisstory had a habit of early morning plays a few years back now it's the odd afternoon.

One of my favourite Old Skool Garage music. 🎧🎵🎶
