Deep In a Dream
The Artie Shaw Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dim all the lights and I sink in my chair.
The smoke from my cigarette climbs through the air.
The walls of my room fade away in the blue,
And I'm deep in a dream of you.
The smoke makes a stairway for you to descend;
You come to my arms, may this bliss never end,
For we love anew just as we used to do
When I'm deep in a dream of you.
Then from the ceiling
Sweet music comes stealing;
We glide through a lover?s refrain.
you're so appealing
That I'm soon revealing
My love for you over again.
My cigarette burns me, I wake with a start;
My hand isn't hurt, but threr's pain in my heart.

Awake or asleep, every memory I?ll keep
Deep in a dream of you

Overall Meaning

The Artie Shaw Orchestra's "Deep In a Dream" is a hauntingly beautiful jazz ballad with a dreamy melody and evocative lyrics. The song describes a state of deep reverie where the singer is lost in thoughts of a lost love. He retreats into his room and dims the lights, creating a mystical atmosphere that's emphasized by the cigarette smoke spiraling around him. As the walls of his room fade away in blue, he is transported to a dream world where he is reunited with his lover.

The singer's yearning becomes palpable as he sings of how the smoke makes a stairway for his lover to descend, and they embrace with the hope that the bliss of their love will never end. The music adds to the ethereal feel of the song as sweet melodies steal into his room, and they move through a lover's refrain. His deep love for her is soon revealed again, and even as he wakes from the dream, he knows that every memory of it will be kept deep within his heart.

The lyrics of "Deep In a Dream" are a poetic representation of the intense yearning for lost love. The song is a classic example of the art of jazz ballads and shows how, through music and lyrics, it is possible to capture complex emotions that are hard to express otherwise.

I discovered Helen via Woody Allen movies soundtrack. What a glorious day that was,for me,anyway. She was such a breath of fresh air. The fact that she fronted the three biggest orchestras of the day,Harry James,Artie Shaw,and Benny Goodman is testament to her greatness. Barely a day goes by without me listening to her. Such a sublime singer. Thanks Woody.

Lost in the 30's - 40's ... Helen Forrest had one of the greatest voices of all times!

I was raised listening to this music. The 12 years of the big bands were the greatest in musical history as far as I am concerned.
Their are many greats but Artie is impossible to top, and with Helen they are the greatest.

 Another masterpiece from perfectionist Artie Shaw! This is obviously a remote recording as is evidenced by the background chatter.  Other than those conversations one can't distinguish the quality of this recording from the studio version such was the virtuosity of Mr. Shaw. A superb tune, Artie's artistry and Helen's premier vocal, a combination that can't be beat.

Thank you for posting this delightful share. The era of the Big Bands was pure magic.

Helen Forrest was probably the best female vocalist of the era of the 30's and 40's. She could hit all the highs and lows with precision and just got better and better as she advanced through the bands of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Harry James By the way, the photo shown on this video is the prettiest one I've seen of her. What a talent!

Helen and Artiew were a terrific combination.

Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. The bandsmen called her "One take Helen" and loved her for it.
