For those who don’t know the story behind this song, Artie Shaw wanted to quit music for good before this song was written. He walked away from his band at the top of his career, and went to Acapulco for a few months. In realizing that he had to go back, he carried the Frenesi melody back with him, and his career stayed on top.

Moral of the story: a vacation will inspire the greatness in us.

I started with the clarinet, put it down for the saxophone. But the clarinet has a draw to it in my older age. Frenesi is one that I played (tried hard) back in the day. This is very special music indeed!

Back from 'Nam in 1971 with my new Pioneer stereo system with excellent turntable. My Dad and I sat on my bed and listen to Artie's greatest hits together. Kind of the first time together as "men." Unfortunately, he died soon after in 1972. WWII took it's toll on him. Great memories of sharing his music together in that short time. Artie Shaw, one of New Haven, CT's finest!

Great tune I have heard in many versions but I like this one best. My late Dad told me the rhythm was known as swing and that he liked to dance it with my Mom when he was young. And despite it being from before my own time it is timeless really and still very good to hear.

It's amazing how this gem still sweeps you into the intended image of a sub-tropical holiday place, even for people (like me) born long after it was first played. As for Artie Shaw - why all this silly stressing about his troubled private life? When he did what he did he was great. This one gives me goosebumps the same way Benny Goodman's "Don't Be That Way" does. They were both great musicians and from this distance that is all that matters.

That was generally Artie's opinion as well. The "rivalry" between Shaw and Goodman was a P.R. effort initiated by the Rockwell-O'Keefe agency (who handled Shaw's band) as a way to generate publicity and money......and it worked too.

A lot of these 1930s and 1940s dance/swing/jazz bands' music evoke warm summer nights in those art deco clubs with outdoors verandas, and the scent of flowers in the night air. Oh how I wish I could experience such a night in those times, sigh.

I was taking my Saxophone in for repair near Newark England and Artie Shaw's clarinet was in the repair workshop. Someone near Nottingham England had bought it after he died and was having it restored. I just want to mention to any would be clarinet players out there that Shaw's instrument was modified. I saw extra keys for greater ease of playing and alternative fingering. This may have helped in his effortless technique.

As a kid, I had a fascination with a RCA AM, Shortwave, 78 console that my folks bought in 1946 right after the war. It ultimately ended up in the basement where I played this record over and over for years. The 78 had Frenesi on one side and Begin the Beguine on the other. Arti Shaw was an incredible musician that knew how to make that clarinet sound awesome! Great memories and still have that RCA and record!!

I grew up listening to the album, "Artie Shaw Plays Glenn Miller Favorites." Artie inspired me to learn clarinet in the 6th grade. I then "graduated" to bass clarinet, alto clarinet and saxaphone. I was honored to play clarinet in the University of Houston Marching Band in 1970. Our director was the famous legendary conductor/composer Bill Moffett. I'll never forget a clarinet solo I played in high school, accompanied by the entire concert band. It was one of the greatest musical experiences in my life. My other great moments were playing in a symphony and also directing a youth string orchestra. They were great, humbling moments since I'm not a professional / degreed musician by trade.

Nobody has ever been able to replicate Artie's glorious tone. Today's clarinets are so superior and so expensive but still players cannot approach the comet that was Shaw.

Artie was great...seeming to effortlessly to play with the most beautiful tone..Benny was great,and was one of,if not the best jazz,swing,improvisors of all time..no need to think one was greater than the other.

I remember this song and many others from the swing era played on the radio in American Samoa every evening in the 90s when I was a kid. It was a part of the radio show called “Dinner Time Favorites” in which most (if not all) songs were from the swing era, an era I didn’t know about until curiosity led me to discover it this year, 2019. It’s so nostalgic.
