Stardust
The Artie Shaw Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.

Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain

My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Artie Shaw Orchestra's "Stardust" evoke a sense of romantic longing and nostalgia. The first verse describes the twilight that descends on the singer's heart, symbolizing a sense of sadness and loss. The reference to the stars climbing high in the sky emphasizes the distance between the singer and the person they are missing. The final line of the verse, "Love is now the stardust of yesterday, the music of the years gone by," reinforces the idea of nostalgia and mourning for a love that has been lost.

The second verse further emphasizes this longing and nostalgia, with the singer admitting to spending lonely nights dreaming of a song that haunts their memory of a past love. The mentions of kisses as inspiration and paradise where roses grew add a sense of idealization and romanticism to this image of lost love. However, the mention of dreaming in vain suggests the singer knows they cannot return to this idealized past, and the memories of love's refrain will remain only in their heart.

Overall, the lyrics of "Stardust" convey a powerful sense of sentimental longing, evoking a time gone by and a love that has been lost. Through references to twilight, stars, and dreaming, the song creates a sense of melancholy romanticism that resonates with listeners across generations.

My Dad graduated High School just in time to go to WWII. He's long gone now, but one question I did think to ask him was "What was your favorite song?" His answer was "Stardust by Artie Shaw".

@meandmymonkey5137

So many people recorded it because it may just be the best song of the jazz era

My Dad the same

Shaw's solo is beyond genius. And, man, he knew it.

@notallthatbad

What a time, such class and heart in this music. It's amazing to think of 80+ year olds of today were once teens wanting to dance with our grandmas.

People may pass, but this music truly is forever.

We will be their age someday, too.
Everyone was young before.

No matter how many times I hear it, I love this recording. Thank you Artie, Billy, Jack, and all the rest of the musicians who did this.
