Windy
The Association Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who's peekin' out from under a stairway
Calling a name that's lighter than air
Who's bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it's Windy

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds (above the clouds)
Above the clouds (above the clouds)

And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds (above the clouds)
Above the clouds (above the clouds)

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

Who's tripping down the streets of the city

Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment

Overall Meaning

The song "Windy" by The Association is a love ode to a girl named Windy who is described as a free-spirited and carefree person. In the first verse, the singer asks who is peeking out from under a stairway and calling his name in a light and airy tone. He then asks who is bending down to give him a rainbow, suggesting that Windy is the one doing these things. In the second verse, the singer describes Windy tripping down the streets of the city, smiling at everyone she sees and reaching out to capture a moment. The chorus repeats that everyone knows it’s Windy and she has stormy eyes that flash at the sound of lies and wings to fly above the clouds.

The song is an interesting blend of psychedelic pop, sunshine pop, and folk rock, with its catchy melody and uplifting lyrics. The lyrics paint a colorful picture of a whimsical girl with stormy eyes and wings, who appears to be the personification of the wind. The song has been interpreted in many ways, from a tribute to an actual girl named Windy, to a metaphor for the carefree nature of the 60s youth culture. Nonetheless, the song remains a classic of the era and a well-loved tune.

I was an Uber driver and picked a man up from the veterans clinic with serious brain damage, and my knowledge of old music was so exciting to him that he was bouncing and clapping with joy as I put on old tunes that were essentially lost to him. He’d sing a bit or hum some and I recognized all of them but this song.
During the ride, we stopped to pick a friend of his up, which is super unusual during an Uber ride but of course I did it for him, and the three of us tracked down this song, which was paining him to try to remember. When he tried to think about things he’d forgotten, it literally looked painful for him. When we found out which song it was he was triggered with nostalgia and exploded “WINDY! WINDY!” And clapped and clapped, red faced smiling at me.
I hold this memory so dear. I actually picked him up again a year or so later and understandably, he did not remember me, but it was still sad :( But I know I made his day that day.
