You're In My Heart
The Association Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I didn't know what day it was
when you walked into the room
I said hello unnoticed
You said goodbye too soon

Breezing through the clientele
spinning yarns that were so lyrical
I really must confess right here
the attraction was purely physical

I took all those habits of yours
that in the beginning were hard to accept
Your fashion sense, Beardsly prints
I put down to experience

The big bosomed lady with the Dutch accent
who tried to change my point of view
Her ad lib lines were well rehearsed
but my heart cried out for you

You're in my heart, you're in my soul
You'll be my breath should I grow old
You are my lover, you're my best friend
You're in my soul

My love for you is immeasurable
My respect for you immense
You're ageless, timeless, lace and fineness
You're beauty and elegance

You're a rhapsody, a comedy
You're a symphony and a play
You're every love song ever written
But honey what do you see in me

You're in my heart, you're in my soul
You'll be my breath should I grow old
You are my lover, you're my best friend
You're in my soul

You're an essay in glamour
Please pardon the grammar
but you're every schoolboy's dream
You're Celtic United, but baby I've decided
You're the best team I've ever seen

And there have been many affairs
Many times I've thought to leave
But I bite my lip and turn around
'cause you're the warmest thing I've ever found

You're in my heart, you're in my soul
You'll be my breath should I grow old

You are my lover, you're my best friend
You're in my soul

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the singer reflects on how he didn't know what day it was when the person walked into the room. The introduction of this person disrupted his sense of time and reality. He had no idea they would have such an impact on his life. Although he said hello, the person left too soon without him being able to properly express his feelings. In the second verse, the singer admits that the initial attraction was purely physical. He was taken in by the person's appearance and charm. As he got to know them better, there were habits and parts of their personality that were hard to accept, such as their fashion choices. However, he put these things down to experience and realized that the person was the love of his life.

The chorus of the song reaffirms that the person is in the singer's heart and soul. He admits that his love for this person is immeasurable, and his respect for them is immense. The bridge of the song describes the person in poetic terms, comparing them to a rhapsody, a comedy, and a symphony, among other things. The singer marvels at the fact that this person is every love song ever written, but is still with him despite his flaws. The final verse compares the person to an essay in glamour and the best team the singer has ever seen. The singer muses that there have been many times where he has thought about leaving, but ultimately decides that the person is the warmest thing he has ever found.

A time when things were not so complicated?
What?
That's how you see the 1960s?
Really?
Sounds like nostalgia has made you forget what the 1960s was really like.
Political turmoil, wars, constant threat of nuclear annihilation,
"race riots" across the United States and a fight for basic racial rights, assassinations,
the Democratic National convention in Chicago,
women fighting for equal rights,
gay people fighting for equal rights,
Indigenous people fighting for justice and recognition,
former colonies of European empires getting independence and going through struggles to establish themselves,
sexual revolution,
drugs, drugs, drugs,
beatniks and hippies,
etc., etc.

The Association - Never My Love

You ask me if there'll come a time
When I grow tired of you
Never, my love
Never, my love

You wonder if this heart of mine
Will lose its desire for you
Never, my love
Never, my love

What makes you think love will end?
When you know that my whole life depends
On you (on you)

Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba)

Never, my love
Never, my love

You say you fear I'll change my mind
I won't require you
Never, my love
Never, my love

How can you think love will end
When I've asked you to spend your whole life
With me? (with me, with me)

Never, my love (never, my love)
Never, my love
Never, my love (never, my love)
Never, my love
Never, my love

"Never my love" came out about the same time l first saw this beautiful girl while in hi school. Every once in a while she would turn and look at me , but there was no indication she was interested in me. After 6 mos. of trying to get her attention, l gave up and started looking for another girl.
One day while l was sitting in my car listening to "Never my love" , and feeling lonely, she walked across the front of my car. I thought " there she goes , doesn't even care how l feel about her." When she was almost out of sight she stopped and gave me the most beautiful smile l had ever seen! My adrenaline rush was so great l couldn't even open the door! I finally opened it and l almost fell out. All the while she stood there looking and laughing. When l walked up to her l was so nervous all l could say was "Hi , Hi, Hi" , my heart was beating so fast l almost passed out. Turned out that she thought l wasn't interested in her. She was right, cause l never made a move toward her, l was also very shy. I almost lost her. We started dating, married and this comming March will be our 54th anniversary , Lord willing. She has been an excellent wife, a perfect mother and grandmother. We are still very much in love, have weathered many storms together. "Never my love" always takes us back to that special moment when our eyes met and it all started from there . She still laughs when she remembers how l almost fell out of car.

My husband dedicated this song to me on our first date we were married for 52 years. He passed away in January of 2022. This song will always be a special part of our lives.

@aghaskamran

God bless him and smile on him in heaven!

I am amazed (and totally jealous!!!!!) of your story. I was a sucker for this song as well as "Cherish" when I was in Jr HS. In those innocent years I dreamed of a life with a dream bride who would be my loving wife for 52 years. I was never as fortunate as your man ... but I can say this in 2022 ... his spirit is most definitely alive and well .. with the words you've written here ... with this very awesome and amazing song ... perhaps you have not come to realize it yet, but you bring your man back to life ... every time you listen to this wonderful song and hear the beauty of his heart singing to you inside every lyric. Never My Love. 1967. Nothing left to say, other than .. LOVE!!!
