Let It Burn
The Atari.s Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Knowledge is key.
You can never know too much.
Open your books aim to the stars
Well I won't let them
Keep me from learning all I can.
Public schools just stand up.
The system feeds our minds.
Did the system tell you about democracy?
The same system that supported slavery?
And doesn't it seem strange that
When we try to make a change
To lock us up and throw away the key.

I won't let you
Play me for a fool
Set me free to go to church
But I can't pray in school.
Make a decision for yourself
Don't bother with any trends
Open up a book
And share the knowledge with your friends.

Did the system tell you about democracy?
The same system that created slavery?
And doesn't it seem strange that

When we try to make a change
To lock us up and throw away the key.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Atari's song Let It Burn urge listeners to reject blind obeisance and search for knowledge that is not provided by the system. The opening lines emphasize the importance of education and self-improvement. The singer urges us to aim for the stars and ignore anyone who discourages us from learning. However, the singer realizes that education is not entirely within our control. Public schools, which are supposed to be the primary source of education, are only one cog in the machinery of the system. The system that feeds our minds is not neutral, and it has its own agendas. The following lines raise some critical questions about the system's role in shaping our understanding of democracy and slavery in our society.

The chorus is a powerful indictment of the status quo, which tends to suppress dissent and marginalize those who question the system. The singer asserts agency over their own intellect and refuses to be fooled by those who want to control them. They assert their right to free expression by seeking solace in church but lament that the same freedom is not extended to schools. The last lines of the song advise us to think critically, ignore trends, and share our knowledge with friends. Overall, the lyrics of Let It Burn are a defiant call to action, urging us to liberate ourselves from the system's grasp and challenge the myth of unquestioning obedience.

Thank you guys for writing this song! I am NOT sure if you remember, but I sang Mark Hoppus from Blink-182's part on back up vocals "live" at The Corona Showcase Theater in California and stage-dived into the crowd right after!!! It was epic!!!! I was so grateful Mark was late to the show because I love singing and I love The Ataris!!! Mark is the greatest bassist and guy in the world and very nice. Chris Knapp, Mike Davenport, & Kris Roe are awesome to play with as well!!! No one plays drums like "Kid" Chris Knapp and nobody writes songs like Kris Roe or plays bass like Mike Davenport. Truly great human beings and guys to make music and have fun with!!! DJ Illicit, Barney Rumble, and DJ Jim Carson are rocking those jams in the house sets for sure!!!
