The Boys Of Summer
The Ataris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer's out of reach

Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I'm driving by your house
Though I know you're not home

I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got your hair combed back
And your sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy
Remember how I made you scream

Now I don't understand what happened to our love
But, baby, when I get you back
I'm gonna show you what I'm made of

I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
I see you walking real slow and you're
Smiling at everyone
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Out on the road today
I saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said
"Don't look back, you can never look back"

I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go, but

I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got that top pulled down
And that radio on, baby

Now I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got that hair slicked back
And those Wayfarers on, baby

And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Overall Meaning

"The Boys of Summer" by The Ataris is a cover of a 1984 song by Don Henley. The song opens with a feeling of emptiness with "Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach" - this sense of emptiness is then deepened with "I feel it in the air, the summer's out of reach". This opening passage seems foreshadow the idea of the loss of something - summer, love, youth. The singer drives by his ex-lover's house, who is not there. However, in his mind's eye, he still sees her, wearing sunglasses and with her hair combed back. Despite their break up "my love for you will still be strong after the boys of summer have gone" - this suggests the sense that the relationship was significant, and the loss just makes it more important.

The second verse records a memory of a past love affair that was intense and possibly destructive, hinted at by "Remember how you made me crazy, Remember how I made you scream". The singer, when he sees a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac, hearing that little voice inside his head telling him "Don't look back, you can never look back", he is remembering the past and the ache of unavailable love, and thought that he knew what love was, suggests that he is out of step with his heart in the present. In the final verse, when the singer sees his former love all he remembers is her beauty and how much he loves her, despite the fact it seems they can never be together again, ending a touching song on a melancholic note.

You know you're old when a 2003 cover of a 1984 song makes you feel nostalgic. Sigh.

I just heard this song tonight, sitting outside Target waiting for my kid to get off work. I cranked it all the way up. Target folks think I'm a crazy old dad, always blasting his tunes. Rock on, never grow up!
