Close To You
The Avalanches最 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here we come, we got funk, [Repeat: x2]
Somebody, somewhere, sex with me,
Here, here we come, we got funk [Repeat: x2]

Next to me [Repeat: x6]

The disco, the disco, the disco, that's gotta be right, [Repeat: x4]
That's gotta be right, down to the midnight, to start
Down to the disco, the disco, the disco,
Down to the midnight, the start to the midnight, start to the midnight,
That's gotta be right

There's a tense young man that's goin' round, turnin' the joint, outside down, [Repeat: x2]
Down to the disco

Start to the midnight, down to the disco
Down to the disco

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Avalanches’ song "Close To You" may seem a bit scattered and nonsensical at first glance, but upon deeper analysis, it becomes clear that the lyrics are borrowing from various genres and eras of music to create a collage of sound and feeling. The first verse, "Here we come, we got funk, somebody, somewhere, sex with me" combines the funk movement of the 70s with a hint of R&B to create a sensual, groovy vibe. The next verse, "Next to me" is repeated six times, perhaps to emphasize the longing and desire implied by the previous verse.

The chorus, "The disco, the disco, the disco, that's gotta be right" is a nod to the disco era of the late 70s and early 80s, a time when dancing and partying were seen as an escape from the worries of life. The repetition of the phrase "that's gotta be right" reinforces the idea of seeking out joy and pleasure in the face of uncertainty. The last verse, "There's a tense young man that's going round, turning the joint outside down" takes us back to the 60s and the era of rock and roll rebellion, where young people were challenging the status quo and creating their own rules.

Overall, "Close To You" is a song that celebrates the power of music to connect us with ourselves and others, and to transport us to different times and places through its sounds and rhythms.

The Avalanches and The Wiseguys had this amazing ability to sample and loop different beats and melodies to create something extraordinary.

2:27 is my favorite part, wish they elaborated on that part. Genius how they switched out the bass on the main sample in favor of a different one to give it more of a disco feel.

1:15... the way they chopped that female vocal sample is truly great

I try to imagine what it would be like to mix a song like this myself, and the sheer amount of time and effort needed to mix a song like this becomes apparent to me. This is ridiculous. This is supreme.

The Avalanches make great use of a technique called "plunderphonics" in which vast quantities of samples from previously existing works are repurposed and crafted into a new musical experience.

The little piece at :55. Something about it, maybe the way they varied the volumes of the flutey sample or the smooth transition, resonates with me more than anything else in music.
