They are well known for their use of eclectic sampling, having created their debut album, Since I Left You (2000), entirely out of over 3,500 samples of obscure records, movies, and television shows. This is famously demonstrated on their hit single "Frontier Psychiatrist".

Before this, they were a hip-hop group with the single album Rock City and the EPy El Producto. After a 16 year hiatus, they released their sophomore album Wildflower (2016), which was followed by We Will Always Love You (2020).

NOTE: The former band actually got their name from the latter, as The Avalanches' " Ski Surfin''" album was known to be their favorite album.
The Avalanches was an instrumental surf rock studio group, active in the 1960s, which included Billy Strange, Tommy Tedesco, David Gates (later of Bread) and Hal Blaine. In 1963 they recorded an LP Ski Surfin', which was re-released in 2007.

I used to live in a country with a horrible climate, cold dark winters, and not much better "summers". It seriously would screw with my head in the dead of winter and I'd be craving warmth and heat. That ending part with what sounds like a funeral dirge at 42:06, which fades into the Fleetwood Mac sample with the child joyfully screaming over the end, always gave me hopeful images of the summer to come after the dark months.

That’s 100 keygroups per program, one sample per keygroup, multiplied by 18 songs.” according to Robbie Chater. And that’s after getting a clean rip off rare vinyls or CDs of more mainstream samples. They had a whole production line, and each dude in the band had a specialty. Because that’s a whole lot of work.

This Gimix Bootleg is basically a phenomenal sister album to SILY and it basically stands on its own! Love how you can hear the DNA (samples) that both albums share.

I remember a version simply being called “The Album” and it had a track early on before Radio called With My Baby. That song was sick!

I can’t remember exactly, as I was digging across this information in about 2015 as you are yourself and can’t remember all the details. What I do remember is that it was a mix tape that made made in small numbers (1-50ish, maybe less) and was handed out to friends and people who were close to the Avalanches. Also, I can remember reading something along the lines of this is what Since I Left you was gonna be originally or this had parts of the original version with tracks they couldn’t clear for copyright reasons. This is just information that I sort of remember seeing, so take it all with a grain of salt and enjoy the music!

This promo cassette tape was first released in an edition of 500 copies on July 24th, 2000. These cassettes are clear, with white text printed on them. The outer case has a clear shell, with a white J-card that has black text on the spine and back. Copies were sold at independent records stores, as well as at live shows.
In late 2020, a small handful of leftover unsold copies were discovered; these were signed on the back of the J-card by Robbie and Tony, and the shop Sound Merch sold them. A few of them were sold unsigned by Modular Records founder Steve Pavlovic.

I bought a copy of this back in the day. The story I heard was that it was released in order to combat bootlegs of "since I left you" that had started leaking. My memory was that there was only 300 or so of these made, but I have no proof of this. It's the best DJ party mix I have ever heard.

@@Zealant it falls into a grey zone. its not strictly legal, but since the amount of inventory being sold and the profit being made are both very small and done through direct transactions labels don't see it as worth it to get litigious. Even if they did actually try to stop the sales it would be extremely difficult to curtail, and legal action would also attract attention and increase demand for whatever is being clamped down on. As long as the process is under the counter and personal to a degree, it's fine.

Things change when production and sales are done systematically on a wider scale and in legal channels. One person personally selling a burnt dvd to some three other guys is inconsequential, but multiple organized people doing it en masse through other private businesses is a threat, and would get shut down. Although it's a transformative artform and should arguably be protected under fair use, any remixes and edits that reach this point are seen by companies as falling in the same camp as piracy, and have to obtain legal permissions.

That's the reason the sale and streaming of uncleared dubbed and edited music is possible on sites like Bandcamp but not on Spotify. It's sort of the equivalent of getting permission to sell your wares in a flea market in comparison to getting permission to sell them at a supermarket.

@@flip100 I think someone had (got access to/ stolen?) a rough copy of SILY and had released it while the album was still being finished off, so the Avalanches released this in July to sort of counter that... then SILY was finished and came out properly in November.
