We Will Always Love You
The Avalanches Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Since I saw you last there's been many a sunset)
(And every day we're apart seems like a week)
(Oh, but I know you would love to hear when we first met)
(But every day we're apart seems like a week)

Since I saw you last there's been many a sunset
(You don't need to break it)
And every day we're apart seems like a week
(Gold is all you see)
Oh, but I know you would love to hear when we first met
(I don't even understand)
Every day were apart seems like a week

Draped in monotony
What's my life gotten me?
Hard to be glorious when two minds meet in the corner
And a story is being told
By me to you, take another hit, what else to do?
Think about leaving the house
But my fears aren't letting up

We'll always love you but, that's not my fault
We'll always love you but, that's not the point
(It's all our fault, and and it's on me you're in pain)
We always loved you

(We'll always love you but, that's not the point)
Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life
Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life
Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life
(We'll always love you but, that's not the point)
Night time on fire dreaming of another life
Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life

Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life
Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "We Will Always Love You" by The Avalanches contains a plethora of themes ranging from love and loss to the struggle for identity and individuality. The lyrics are reminiscing about the past and how everything has changed since the two lovers were last together. The opening lines, "Since I saw you last, there's been many a sunset, And every day we're apart seems like a week" express the distance between two people and how time seems to move slowly when they’re not together. The singer knows the other person would love to hear about the day they first met, but the fact that every day apart seems like a week reinforces their longing for each other.

As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the relationship is not the only thing that has changed. The singer is "Draped in monotony," and their life has lost its sense of glory. They’re telling a story to the other person and asking them to take another hit, emphasizing the inclination to avoid the problems and challenges they face. They're afraid to leave their house and confront their fears, which are consuming them. Then, the chorus "We'll always love you but, that's not my fault/We'll always love you but, that's not the point" suggests that something happened that led to the end of the relationship between the two, but the love they had for each other remains.

In the final section of the song, the lyrics express the singer's desire to escape their current reality by dreaming of a different life. They’re nocturnal, and at night, they can forget about their problems and embrace their desires. The repetition of the line "Night time, I'm fine dreaming of another life" shows that the singer is in a state of disillusionment, longing for something that they don't have.

Overall, the lyrics to "We Will Always Love You" encapsulate the yearning and nostalgia associated with love and loss while touching upon the difficulties of living in a world that seems to reject one's desires.

I first heard this the day my first daughter was born who was very ill and didn’t make it. Strangely, as someone who’s always found it very difficult to connect with emotional scenarios, this song really helped guide me through the feelings, was oddly grounding and, even deeper, so did the original song the Avalanches sampled (Hammond Song by The Roches), which I subsequently looked up. This is the first time I’ve listened to it since then (Dec 2020) as I was scared of feeling that way again but it felt like an old friend. Thanks guys, this track will always be special to me.
