If It's The Beaches
The Avett Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't say it's over
'Cause that's the worst news I could hear
I swear that I will
Do my best to be here just the way you like it
Even though it's hard to hide
Push my feelings all aside
I will rearrange my plans and change for you
If I could go back
That's the first thing I would do
I swear that I would
Do my best to follow through
Come up with a master plan
A homerun hit, a winning stand
A guarantee and not a promise
That I'll never let your love slip from my hands

If it's the beaches
If it's the beaches' sands you want
Then you will have them
If it's the mountains' bending rivers
Then you will have them
If it's the wish to run away
Then I will grant it
Take whatever what you think of
While I go gas up the truck

Pack the old love letters up
We will read them when we forget why we left here

Overall Meaning

The song "If It's The Beaches" by The Avett Brothers is a love song about a man who is willing to change his plans and rearrange his life for the woman he loves. The opening lines of the song are a plea, almost a prayer, not to say that the relationship is over, because the prospect of losing the love of his life is the worst news he could ever receive. He promises to do his best to be what she wants, even though itā€™s hard to hide his true feelings. He's willing to rearrange his plans and life plans and make things work for both of them.

The second verse sees the singer showing regret for not following through in the past, hence if he could go back in time, the first thing he would do is to make sure that he follows through. He wants to make sure that he never loses her love and wants to come up with a master plan or something that will help him win the relationship with her. He promises not to let her love slip from his hands.

The chorus is a plea by the singer for the woman he loves to tell him what she wants so he can have it for her. Whether it's beaches or mountains or to run away, he would grant it just to make her happy. He wants to make things work and says that they can read the old love letters to remind them why they fell in love in the first place.

Overall, the song is a moving declaration of love and a reminder of the importance of working on a relationship to keep love alive.

This songā€¦ šŸ’™ It isnā€™t always about romantic love. Itā€™s about the love we wish we had given. Follow through, check up, be present. This song breaks my heart. If only I had. I miss him.

The entire Avett Brothers collection tells an emotional story which few bands can compare to, with honesty that feels like you're reading out of their journal. However, three songs from the Avetts stay with me in ways that others can't fully:
1) Through My Prayers
2) Father's First Spring
3) If it's the Beaches
Each of these truly grabs the listener by the heart and soul.

It was the last concert I saw before Covid hit and
What a show! In the heart of the city on a beautiful fall night- strange thing was there was something in the air, and I couldnā€™t put my finger on it. Something was coming. I am no clairvoyant or anything like that, but it just felt strange. But yeah, that was great. I hope to see them again soon.

There are many of us that hold this song very close to our hearts. It is poignant, lyrically dynamic and quite powerful. It is far from boring. Boring doesn't bring a swell of emotion. It doesn't evoke tears. Boring can't turn a jilted heart back. This song is a masterpiece. That's not an opinion... it's a fact
