Slight Figure Of Speech
The Avett Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say you've gotta lose a couple fights to win
It's hard to tell from where I'm sitting
They say that this is where the fun begins
I guess it's time that I was quitting

A slight figure of speech
I cut my chest wide open
They come and watch us bleed
Is it art like I was hoping now?

They said "I hope that you will never change"
I went and cut my hair
They say "Don't take your business to the big time"
I bought us tickets there, oh

A slight figure of speech
I cut my chest wide open
They come and watch us bleed
Is it art like I was hoping now?

What did you expect
And what did you forget
That to live you let go of me with each step
It becomes a progression I won't let regret manifest
To aggression
Are you to assess what I've been? What I am? Or become?
Did you stop to accept how pathetically dumb
It can be to
Attack those around 'cause you're
True to color, a town, a time, or a place?
It's not you, it's not mine
And besides it is gone
And you never will find it again
But I don't want to fight
I just ask let me be
I won't give the chance to be my enemy
So go home
Think it through

A jet plane and a big idea
I jump over the sea
What if's hot on my trail
But they can't catch me, no

A slight figure of speech
I cut my chest wide open

They come and watch us bleed
Is it art like I was hoping now?

Overall Meaning

The Avett Brothers' song "Slight Figure Of Speech" is an anthem to the innate human desire to be unique, to stand out, and to leave a mark on the world. The song speaks to the idea that in order to succeed, one needs to be willing to take risks and face possible defeat before they can achieve their dreams. The lyrics "They say you've gotta lose a couple fights to win, it's hard to tell from where I'm sitting" speak to the theme of perseverance and not letting setbacks discourage you from pursuing your goals.

The metaphorical "cutting of the chest wide open" is a representation of the artist's vulnerability and willingness to expose their innermost thoughts and feelings for the world to see. In doing so, the artist asks the question, "Is it art like I was hoping now?" It's a plaintive cry for validation which reflects the often-frustrating reality that artists face in trying to be understood and appreciated by their audience.

Further on, the lyrics delve into the idea of changing oneself to please others. The lines "They said 'I hope that you will never change', I went and cut my hair, They say 'Don't take your business to the big time', I bought us tickets there, oh" suggest that the artist is grappling with the tension between staying true to oneself and trying to gain acceptance from others. There's an underlying sense of defiance and challenge in the decision to cut one's hair and to take one's business to the big time, suggesting that the artist is not content with being pigeonholed or underestimated.

I've been a huge fan since the early 2000's and I'm always shocked by how little fanfare these guys get. Better than any of these popular bands. They get a lot attention for the genre though. It used to be more grunge/punk dirty grass folk which was really fun.
