Wandering
The Babies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now that I'm wandering out and on my own
Take more than a family for me to call this place my home
A mother's ears hear a thousand miles so I do not make a sound
Walk inside my own shadow with my hands over my mouth
And be quiet

Now that the day is done and the sun is on its fall
Wonder as I wander, how am I alive at all
What did it take to get me here, what will it take to leave
Fall in love and then I hate everything I see

When I'm tired I hit the floor
When I'm upset I go to the bar
And there's nowhere, nothing, and no one more
As warm as the strength of your arms

Become what? Become what?
Become who you are
I remember you well beneath that silver bell
The one that you wore around your heart

Let us meet one day beneath that silver shade
The one that was there at the start
At the start

Now that I'm wandering out and on my own
Take more than a family for me to call this place my home

Overall Meaning

The Babies' song "Wandering" is a reflective tune that speaks about finding one's place in the world. The lyrics are ripe with imagery that convey themes of isolation, introspection, and personal growth. The song begins with the artist expressing a sense of detachment from family and the need for a more profound connection to feel settled. The metaphor of walking inside one's shadow with hands over one's mouth is an expression of introspection or a desire to remain unnoticed. The artist contemplates the fragility of life and wonders what it takes to survive. The lyrics suggest that the journey to self-discovery can be turbulent, and even though it may involve falling in love, there may be periods of disillusionment and hatred.

The chorus echoes the themes of becoming and self-discovery, asking the listener to "become who you are." The bridge offers a glimpse of hope and reminiscence, with the artist recalling the memory of a person who wore a silver bell around their heart. This symbolizes a connection from the past that can be revisited and reinstated. The song ends where it began, with the artist still searching for a place to call home.
